The Sump is an OEM part for Whirlpool dishwashers. It serves as the central component of the dishwasher's water circulation system, housing the pump and filters. This part collects water during the wash cycle, which is then pumped through the spray arms to clean the dishes. The sump also traps food particles and debris, preventing them from recirculating and ensuring dishes come out clean.

Symptoms of a failing Sump include:

  • Poor cleaning performance, with dishes still dirty after a cycle
  • Water not draining properly or remaining in the bottom of the dishwasher
  • Unusual noises, like grinding or humming, indicating pump issues
  • Leaks under the dishwasher due to cracks or seal failures in the sump

Causes of a bad sump often include regular wear and tear, accumulation of hard water deposits, or blockages from large food particles and debris. Additionally, the seals can degrade over time, leading to leaks.

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Sump (Part Number: OEM18065049)

1 Answer

Keri, if voltage is reaching the circulation motor and water does not spray around in the dishwasher, the sump motor would certainly be an issue. However, if the model number could be provided in a new post, it may allow for more accurate information to be presented.

Hello John, you will need to locate the leak source first, if it is just at the sump edge the gasket can be replaced, if however, it is from a sump crack or the diverter motor area the entire sump should be replaced.

Roger, With the unit not draining the water out then this would most likely be a faulty drain pump which would be part number WPW10348269.

Bill for Model Number JDB8700aws3

Jenn-air Model JDB8700aws3 SN F42503556. My dishwasher was leaking so I replaced the sump. I ran a test cycle with no detergent but with heated air. The washer filled and started. No leakage under the dishwasher. I ran it through a wash cycle but did it not drain. A red blinking light started. Pushed control lock for 3 seconds to stop red blinking light. Tried to restart but no response.so held down control lock to reset the control lock. I tried to run another cycle but only got a small whirring noise which I assume was the drain pump. It stopped after several minutes. Is something blocking the drain pump or is this a protection mechanism to prevent burning out the drain pump. In the past I could press the drain button and the dishwasher would attempt to empty the sump but now pushing the drain bution does nothing. Thanks

Bill, the drain hose, drain connections, and drain impeller will need to be inspected for obstructions and a bad impeller. If there are any obstructions, they will need to be cleared. If the impeller is loose or damaged, the drain pump WPW10531320 will need to be replaced.

Ross for Model Number 66513049K113

Hello, My Kenmore dishwasher is leaking out around the diverter seal. I researched a little and thought mine was a common unit where the W10195677 seal can be replaced but I tried this seal and it does not fit my dishwasher as it is a little too big. After looking again on your site now, I don't see that I can purchase the individual seal for my specific unit on the parts schematic? I also had a very hard time removing the old seal so i am wondering if this piece is not replaceable on mine? Do I need to purchase a new sump piece as this looks to be the only way to get the seal according to the schematics? I don't believe the diverter motor would come with the new seal since it slides up through the sump assembly and seal? Thank you.

Mark for Model Number WDT770PAYM0

On my dishwasher, I had water leaking from the diverter seal in the sump. It ruined the diverter. I was about to purchase a new diverter and sump from your company and seen that you sold a model that had the diverter and pump assembly already on the sump. When it arrived, all I had to do was switch my drain pump from the old sump to the new one. I got it installed, and it was fairly straightforward. I consulted the video online and followed all the steps. I hooked the water and power back up and tested the dishwasher. The dishwasher made some funny noises, and the display lights for the cycles blinked, some appeared weak, and some did not function. This leads me to believe that something is hooked up incorrectly, possibly a wire came loose during the process that I did not see, or possibly a grounding problem? This part of the dishwasher functioned fine before. Any ideas of what it could be?

Mark, with the live voltage turned off at the power source, the unit will need to be inspected for any loose connections, pinched wires, and bare wires especially around the sump assembly WPW10605058. Based on the information provided, this is going to be the most likely cause.

When the dishwasher is running, periodically there is a loud clicking sound coming from the bottom of the dishwasher. I suspect it might be the diverter motor, but I don't want to order one if I don't have to. I did have to replace the grommet that the diverter shaft goes through about a year ago, as that was leaking. Is there anything else that would cause intermittent clicking while it's running? It's not the spray arms inside the unit hitting anything, they're running free and clear. Thanks, Bill

1 Answer

Bill, it sounds like there is something caught in the wash motor, remove the round micro filter and see if there is anything caught down around the bottom of the sump. It may be small and floating around in the sump, that would explain why you don't hear it all the time.
