How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP5985146 / W10820036 Door Switch

Diagnosed it by opening the door and manually pushing in the door switch and it would run. Ordered the new door switch and it was a pretty easy process to swap out. Now I have dry clothes again! 

It's both a happy and sad story. Admittedly, it did take me a while to figure out that it was actually just a failed door switch that was preventing my gas dryer from starting. Even started looking for a new dryer, since mine is more than 30 yo. Happy part is that new switch installed easily and just like your video described, and the dryer started up like new right after replacement. Sad part is that the salesman at my local appliance store won't be getting that sales commission on the new gas dryer he wanted to sell me! 

Our Kenmore dryer is VERY old. We thought we might have to replace it due to parts availability. At a minimum, we figured we would have to wait for an appliance repair person then wait for the part then pay a hefty bill. As I did some research, it looked like something my handy husband could handle. The first part we ordered was for a newer model dryer and didn't work. My husband replaced the Lid Check Switch and the Door Switch. This was per another's customer's testimony on this site as to how he fixed the problem. Thank you. Replaced the lid switch assembly. 

Called Customer Service and twice and they were very helpful in assisting me to ensure the part I needed was correct. Placed the order and upon arrival I called again discussing the new part to the old showing minor differences and we confirmed the connection was correct. I connected the part and tighten the screws pull the top down and tested the dryer. All went perfect and is working well. Your Customer Service personnel was not in a hurry to move on. They completed the call only until my questions were satisfied. I thank each person that helped me and won't hesitate to call any future needs. 

Replaced the lid switch and the lid check switch. The repair was relatively easy. On top of the control panel are 4 screws. The two inner screws hold the control panel in place. Remove the two inner screws and move the control panel forward. Midway to the right you will see both switches. Remove the old switches unplug the wiring install the new switches and reconnect the wiring. I photographed the wiring connections prior to removing the old switches. 

I ordered the part from your company and it fit perfectly. The part had a few updates on it but was very understandable and the install was quick and easy and probably saved me over $160 repair bill. I could not believe your company had this part. The dryer is over 30 years old. Thanks for your help. Rich
