How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP6012742 / WP8318084 Washer Lid Switch

I searched for any common fixes related to my washer and it all seemed to point to the top-loading lid switch. I found the part here...ordered it and it arrived in 2 days. It was a simple replacement and it worked perfectly. 

I replaced the switch, it was a simple fix. I removed 4 screws, 2 Phillips and 2 hex which allowed me to to remove the control panel. Then 1 ground screw for the switch.

Ordered a lid switch on the website and watched the video on how to fix it. The video was very good and it was easy to fix. 

Ordered a switch and the part came quickly, got it installed and BOOM it worked like a champ !!! Thanks. 

Biggest problem was removing console so that problem could be diagnosed. Online videos for my model showed removing screws to allow console removal. My machine did not have screws. My machine used spring clips that needed to be squeezed by reaching between tub and top panel. Once console was lifted problem was quickly determined to be the lid switch. I ordered the replacement switch and when it arrived it was a 5 minute job to install and snap console back in place. 

I got on my IPAD found AppliancePartsPros.com and in a very short time located the exact part for my Whirlpool Washer. I placed the order and in about five days found the little package on my back porch. I don’t know who delivered the part or when they delivered it. Anyway, I got busy. Removed two screws on the back part that the controls set in. The switch is just clipped into the machine. I removed the green-ground wire, unplugged the white and black wires, in clipped and remove the defective part, set the new part in place, screwed the ground wire back in place, clipped the white and black wires to the switch, placed the back part in place, screwed in the two holding screws and was back in business in about twenty minutes. Had I called a maintenance man it would of cost me around 150.00 dollars. The switch was 21.00 plus shipping charges. I’m very pleased with their service and highly recommend it. If you have a problem with appliances, seek out a video on what’s wrong and how to replace the defective part. It’s worth your time. Go.

Appliance Parts Pros had a video with step by step instructions which made the fix very easy. The video they showed was a little different from my model. After watching another video from a different source, I was able to take the washer apart and replace the switch. My washer was the type where you took a putty knife and slid it between the controls at the top of the machine and the body of the washer. There were two spring clips that you press in and the top controls fold back. It works great now. 

I went on line to watch a video on the Kenmore Elite washer repair and to my amazement, this problem was such an easy fix, I typed in Kenmore Elite parts and wrote the part numbers down, from the parts that I was replacing, looked them up and I was on the way to some clean laundry.
