Took off the front panel, removed one screw from a panel and one screw and two wires from the heating element, and put an ohmmeter across the terminals. There was no continuity, so replaced the element --- a matter of sliding the old one out, sliding the new one in, putting the wires back on and securing with the screws.
Whole thing took about 10 minutes.
