I have an older (20+ years) Whirlpool side by side refrigerator. The ice maker stopped making ice. I could get cold water at the drink dispenser. It sounded as if the water solenoid was turning on and water flowed but no water went into the ice maker tray. I had other projects going on so I could not trouble shoot right away. I turned off the ice maker and looked at it 4 weeks later. Since refrigerators a lot of times are in a cubby hole I ordered a new water valve since mine was in a cubby hole and has to be pulled out from the wall and hole to work on. When I pulled the refrigerator out, I noticed the ice maker water line was not hooked to the solenoid. It looked like the water line slipped out of the fitting to the solenoid. There was dried dirt all over the floor behind the refrigerator. The linoleum floor had shrunk and come unglued from the floor due to water running on it. The refrigerator was drying up the water. Anyway it turned out that the plastic water hose dried, rotted and broke off the water ice maker solenoid supply fitting. So when the ice maker demanded water it sprayed on the floor behind and under the refrigerator. I replaced the ice maker water line and installed a new water supply solenoid since I had already purchased it. It was not difficult to replace the water solenoid. What took time was all the other effects of a broken water supply line.
