I am not a professional appliance mechanic - just a persistent and observant handyman. I removed the top cover panel and opened the control console. With the help of the included technical notes, I tested all the switches and dials - they were all working properly but I noticed that the belt was broken. In the technical notes, I read that there is a belt switch. After removing the front panel and drum. I found the belt switch which was activated by lifting the spring-loaded idler pulley. To test it I lifted the pulley with the broken belt, removed the door switch and depressed it, turned the dial to Permanent Press (any of the timer settings would have worked), pressed the "Start" button and the motor started. Installing the belt was very trying given the limited space and the tension of the idler pulley spring. I pushed the arm of the idler pulley up and toward the motor with a pry bar, holding it in place. This gave me the ability to use both hands to loop the belt under the idler pulley and around the motor pulley. I reassembled and tested it successfully. The customer was thrilled.
