Installed a new control board, which fixed the problem.
But in our case the control board was behind the front stainless steel trim panel of the door.
And we needed torx screwdrivers of different sizes to remove the trim panel.
Regarding repair difficulty, I'd say that in some cases (like ours) one would have to know a bit about appliances in order to attempt this himself.
