Suspected the heater had failed because air coming from vent was not as hot as it used to be. Long wash times were because dishwasher was waiting to no avail for water to get up to temperature. Removed dishwasher to gain access to heater electrical connections. Confirmed heater had failed by continuity check. Replaced heater per included instructions. Reinstalled dishwasher. Problem solved!
