This water filter base secures the refrigerator's replaceable water filter cartridge and directs filtered water to the dispenser and icemaker. Replacing a damaged base restores a proper seal and helps prevent leaks and flow interruptions. What it does:

  • Holds and seals the water filter cartridge so water passes through the filter media
  • Directs filtered water to the dispenser and icemaker plumbing
  • Prevents leaks caused by cracked or worn filter housing
  • Can resolve low water flow, intermittent dispensing, or water taste issues when base is leaking or not sealing
What's included:
  • One water filter base assembly
Install notes:
  • Turn off refrigerator and shut off the water supply before starting
  • Relieve system pressure by dispensing water until flow stops, if applicable
  • Remove the old housing carefully; inspect O-rings and replace if damaged
  • Hand-tighten only; check connections and test for leaks after restoring water and power

I have been using the ice maker/cube, crushed ice and water dispenser for several years changing filters as needed. I recently changed the filter (GE MWF) and after using the water dispenser a short time I get a chattering noise. I remove the reinstall the filter and get the chattering again after a time when dispensing water. My ice dispenser works with no problem as well as making ice with no problem. I was trying to find if a part might be needed to replace but find no listing in your parts directory for this. What causes this and how do I repair this?

1 Answer

Robert, The most likely cause for this issue will be that the filter head is causing the chattering noise. The part number for the filter head will be WR17X12512.

In trying to remove a stuck filter in the filter base. I took apart the filter base. Now I cannot figure out how to get that spring back into the base so that the filter locks in place. Any idea how do to that? My main issue if with the spring. Is there just one spring or two? I only have one but I am wondering if there wasn't a second one that popped off and rolled away out of sight when I took the base apart. Can't seem to figure it out from pictures on the internet. Thanks!

Hello Audra, I'm sorry but the 242009604 is not considered to be a serviceable part by the manufacturer so there are no instructions on its disassembly and/or reassembly. Thank you for your patience and understanding in this matter.

Hello Cheryl. You may need to remove the lines and cut off the end to provide a clean cut for inserting into the coupler. Make sure you press them all the way in until they lock into place. This should take care of the issue. If not, then the base may be defective.

Chris, Unfortunately the manufacturer does not have instructions for replacing the filter housing. There is also no video available. In order to replace you will need to remove the filter. With filter removed you will remove the lower housing. Make sure that water supply is shut off and you may have to disconnect the water line at the water valve. The lower housing appears to just be clipped in. Then there will be a screw in the upper housing and holding in the filter head. Remove the screws and the filter head should come forward in which you will disconnect the tubing by pushing in on the ring around the tube, then pull the tube out at the same time.
