The Latch is an OEM part for Frigidaire microwaves. This latch keeps the microwave door securely closed during operation, ensuring the appliance functions safely and effectively. It also interacts with the door switches to ensure the microwave does not operate unless the door is properly closed.

Causes of a bad door latch can include regular wear and tear, physical damage from forceful closing, or mechanical failure.

Symptoms of a bad microwave door latch include:

  • The door not staying closed or securely latched
  • The microwave not starting or stopping unexpectedly
  • Difficulty in opening or closing the door
  • The microwave running when the door is not fully closed

This OEM Frigidaire part is also compatible with Electrolux, Gibson, Kelvinator and some Kenmore models.

1 Answer

Pat, The spring does not come with the latch on the microwave. You would have to get the spring and latch as separate parts.

Davidk for Model Number Frigidaire FGMV174KFA

The door on my unit very suddenly stopped latching shut. I've determined that the little hook inside the door frame to which the tensioning spring (Part#AP3770117) attaches (the other end of the spring, of course, attaching to a similar hook on the latch itself) has broken off. It seems I have two options, either buy the (rather expensive) part #AP4459303 or try to epoxy the broken hook back on (not sure how much tension the spring exerts so I'm not sure how likely a repair like this is to hold). So, two questions: 1. IS AP4459303 the part I'd need to replace? 2. What's the liklihood that gluing the piece back in place would hold?

David, If just the latch broke then it would not be necessary to replace the complete door. You could replace the latch itself which is part number 5304440314. The epoxy would most likely not hold.

Gerry, The hinge pins that the door sits on are connected by being welded to the inside of the cabinet and if they are loose then the welds have broken.

Hello Glen, The door frame needs to come off first. This is kind of tricky as it is the most common part to be broken during disassembly. You see, it clips on on its' inside and outside edges and you must work back and forth with a small screwdriver or similar tool. Be aware it's easy to chip the paint off so be careful. Once the door frame is off, it's pretty self-explanatory as to the rest of the disassembly and reassembly procedures. Of course there are Phillips head screws that hold the assembly in the door. The door frame doesn't need to be completely removed as you only need to access the one end. The hinge side of the door frame can remain on the door assembly.
