The defrost drain pan collects water that melts off the evaporator during automatic defrost and holds it near the warm compressor so it can evaporate. Replacing a damaged pan helps prevent leaks, puddles, and odors around the base of the refrigerator.

  • Collects defrost water routed from the evaporator drain
  • Positions water in warm airflow near the compressor for evaporation
  • Replace if the pan is cracked, warped, missing, or leaking
  • Symptoms can include water on the floor, moisture under the unit, or musty odors
What's included: 1 defrost drain pan Install notes:
  • Unplug the refrigerator; wear cut-resistant gloves
  • Pull the unit forward and remove the lower rear access panel to reach the pan near the compressor
  • Lift out the old pan; transfer any reusable clips/brackets; seat the new pan under the drain tube and ensure it's level and clear of moving parts
  • Reinstall the panel, restore power, and check for proper drainage and evaporation

Questions & Answers

For Frigidaire Defrost Pan (Refrigerator) (Part Number: OEM21644976)

Jim Alexander for Model Number FFSS2614QP6A

Mice got under my frig and chewed up the drain hose, drain pan and wires to the condenser motor. I realize that the drain hose goes to the drain pan, but where does the other end of the hose connect to and how to I access that area? Other than the hose, do I need any connecters, adapters etc? A friend told me that some "plastic" parts are being made of plant products rather than oil based as an environmental thing. Any truth to this? Will varmints be eating up our appliance parts now?

1 Answer

Jim A, The drain is also plastic and sticks down into the machine compartment through the cabinet. If that part of it has been destroyed then there is no access to it as the cabinet is foam-filled insulation.

Steve, Your hose should be in the drain pan but not attached to it. It attaches to the ceiling of the compressor area and sits in the drain pan. If it is laying in the floor then one side attaches to a nipple that comes from the freezer to the machine compartment.

John, Yes, you can access the back and there will be a tube sticking out of the top of the machine compartment for the defrost drain.

Rachel, You've got the right idea and procedure. You'll probably want to remove both the compartment cover in back and the front kick plate for accessing everything easier. Regardless of the position (front or side), make sure you "block" up the refrigerator, before you start reaching around under the machine. Have a towel handy to wipe up any defrost water that might spill. There's more than 1(one) screw holding the drip pan to the bottom of the refrigerator.

Lee, The screws that retain the control panel to the refrigerator ceiling should be a 1/4" hex head screw 5304455650 and wouldn't need a "special" tool. You may want to use a mirror or remove the shelves to see and access the screws. Once you have access dont forget to flush the drain tube in the wall with hot water and a turkey baster.

Kerry, There should be screws in the front of the drain pan that would hold the front to the underside of the unit.

Tad, The drip pan under the refrigerator does not need to be removed. It is bolted to the bottom of the unit. As for the water on the top shelf and under the crisper drawers you will want to remove the housing for the controls in the refrigerator compartment and will want to clean out the cup that is on the back of the housing as the port for the drain will be clogged and causing leaking issue.

Hello Julie, You will need to remove both gas and power to the unit before beginning. You will then need to remove all burner bases, (two screws), so the main top can be raised. This will provide access to the tubes for replacement.

Eric, In order to remove the drain pan to replace you will need to tilt the unit back and block it up. You will then be able to remove the drain pan and install the new one.
