This compressor start device kit helps your refrigerator or freezer's compressor start reliably each cooling cycle. Replacing a weak or failed start device can restore cooling performance and stop repetitive clicking or brief humming when the compressor tries to start.

  • Powers the compressor's start winding to initiate start-up, then disengages
  • Supports consistent compressor starts to maintain proper temperatures
  • Common symptoms of failure: unit warm, compressor not running, rapid clicking from rear, humming then shuts off
  • May accompany signs like heat damage or a burnt odor at the old device
What's included: One compressor start device kit Install notes:
  • Unplug the appliance before servicing; allow components to cool
  • Located on the side of the compressor behind the rear access panel
  • Photograph wiring and compressor pin layout; transfer wires one at a time and seat the device fully on the pins
  • If your unit uses a separate run capacitor, reconnect it exactly as originally wired

Barry for Model Number MRT13CREW5

Overload relay #218721103 melted on my Kelvinator fridge. Bought part #5304491944 as advised to replace it. Everbody says read instructions and that tells you exactly what to do. NOT! The answers here say to put new plug in and the old red wire goes to L and old white wire goes to R, or something like that. Nowhere on any of the pieces in the kit I got does it have an L or an R. What now? Any other way to know which wires to splice together? Thanks.

1 Answer

Barry, There is a post that sticks in the middle of the start relay. The terminals to connect the wires are just below this. Plug in the harness that was sent in the kit to the start relay and the wire that is closest to the center post will have the white wire spliced to it and the red wire will go to the other wire.

Hello KB. Plug the new plug into the relay and which ever wire is connected to N (blue) will connect to the white wire and the red will go to the L white wire.

Daniel, If you look at the start relay there will be a L and N next to the terminals. Plug the new plug into the relay and which ever wire is connected to N will connect to the white wire and the red will go to the L.

Rob, The clips for that are on the connectors for the relay are part of the harness. Unfortunately the harness is not available but you can install a 1/4" spade terminal to the wire.

Hi Pam. Yes, the starter relay part # 5304491944 is the part that needs immediat replacement. Keep in mind that the compressor windings may have been affected as well. Use the volt/ohm meter part # MA-DM1 to see if the compressor windings are ohming out ok. Between the c" and s' there will be approx 6-12 0hms and between c' to r' there will be 4-6 ohms. Make sure each leg to compressor ground has not shorted (o-ohms) to ground. Thank You.
