The Compressor Overload and Start Relay is an OEM part for GE refrigerators. It plays a crucial role in starting the refrigerator’s compressor and protecting it from electrical overloads.

Over time, these components can fail due to electrical wear, overheating, or repeated cycling. This can cause the refrigerator to malfunction or stop working altogether.

Symptoms of a bad compressor overload and start relay include:

  • The refrigerator not cooling properly
  • Clicking noises from the back of the refrigerator
  • The compressor not running
  • Overheating of the refrigerator

This GE replacement part is also compatible with Hotpoint, RCA, and some Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Ge Compressor Overload And Start Relay (Part Number: OEM11389548)

1 Answer

Hello George, This will certainly cause an issue. The rattling noise is the ceramic disc in the start relay. It is necessary that this ceramic disc be intact to start the compressor. If the compressor is bad, this will occur, but in the case of a fatigued relay, it can happen anyway. The only way to know for sure is to replace the start device WR09X10106 and if it runs 2 days, the issue is usually resolved. You can test the compressor electrically, but this is no indication that it is mechanically intact. Just make sure if there are any burned spots on the terminals coming out of the compressor, sand them until shiny to insure a proper electrical connection so the new start device doesn't generate heat and fail prematurely.

Hello Craig. The connector on the wires will only plug into the overload WR09X10106 one way. There is no way or crosswiring the overload. Hope this helps.

John A. for Model Number GE Model: GTS18HCMERCC

The fan in the back of the freezer was making a noise. It had been doing this for a month or so. This morning there was a slight burning smell coming from the area of the refrigerator. I replaced the upper fan and it now runs very smooth and quiet. I have let the unit run for 5 hours now but it will not get cold. I can hear the limit switch on the compressor click and the compressor will run for about 15 seconds then the limit switch will click again. The compressor feels very warm but not hot. You can leave your hand on it. The compressor fan is running fine and the whole unit is very clean. Do you think the limit switch is bad? Thanks for your answer. John

Hi John. Use a coil cond. brush to clean the coils part is []. The Cond. fan needs to be running as fast as possible while the compressor is running. Part # TJ103. Is there any frost on the back wall of the freezer ? If so replace the timer part # is WR9X502. Heater part # is WR51X10038, and the defrost thermostat part # is WR50X10071. Is there any frost normally on the coils behind the back wall? If not then it is a sealed system issue. Is the brass filter/drier cold ? (sealed system issue). Clean the coils and make sure the fans run and doors seal fine first. Thank You.

Hello Bill! If the 5sp overload/ptc WR09X10106 is defective, it will correct the issue. The overload keeps the compressor from starting in high amperage conditions and keeps it from overheating, when the part has not failed. The ptc is the start relay and kickstarts the compressor. Double check your model number, as GTS18FBMWW is not valid. Some of the GE GTS18FBM models use different parts. Thanks!

Frank, Actually, your on the right track, PTC start devices and capacitors, don't react well to generator supplied voltages. I'm sure you'll be fine with the new PTC relay/start device WR09X10106 and the capacitor WR55X24065 . Thanks and Good Luck.

Hello Kurt. The manufacture does not recommend using the 3 in 1 hard start kit on this model. You will need to order the factory replacement WR09X10106. Thanks.
