Paul May 24, 2013 for Model Number GE TFF20DBC My fridge is having a defrost problem. The heating element and thermostat are good so I am looking at the defrost timer as the problem but I am not sure where it is located. It looks like it is near the top of the freezer towards the back. Is that correct? Thank you for your help! Paul
1 Answer Paul, On that style older refrigerator, you'll probably find the defrost timer located behind the kick plate, on the front of the refrigerator. It may also be located in the refrigerator compartment inside the control housing behind the light shield. But not in the freezer compartment, The cold, moisture or ice would affect the mechanism. Bo August 25, 2012 for Model Number tfx22dh Unit freezes up in back wall of freezer every 7 to 10 days. Unplug till it thaws out and ok until it freezes again 7 to 10 days. Is it the timer or the thermostat? Heating coils have checked out ok.
1 Answer Hello Bo. It sounds like you may have a defrost problem with the unit. Check and see if there is any frost build up on the back wall of the freezer. If so, you will need to test the defrost heater and the defrost thermostat. They should read closed for continuity when cold. You can test this with a multi-meter TJMA-DMT3. I will include a link at the end to assist you how to use the multi-meter if needed. If both parts are good, you will need to replace the defrost timer. Once the problem is repaired, you will need to thaw out the ice on the coils before the unit will operate properly. http://forum.appliancepartspros.com/oven-repair-including-ranges-cooktops/4810-how-check-continuity-ohmmeter.html Read More...
Jane August 04, 2012 for Model Number GE TFF20DB I just realized that the instructions meant that I splice the new wire to the existing one, so I figured that one out. My next question is that the old defrost timer has a ground wire fused to the timer and grounded to the bottom support bar. There is not a specific place to connect the ground wire to the new unit. I can unscrew one of the screws that holds the new timer together and try to use that for a ground...should I?
1 Answer Hello Jane, The ground wire can be attached to any metal place you can find to fasten it. Read More...
Jane August 02, 2012 for Model Number GE TFF20DB Once again thanks for the info! The timer was a bear to get out but I did manage to remove it. It is warm to the touch and on the front of the unit there is a window which shows rapid movement of something. Do either of those observations indicate that it is working? It does not look like the repacement timer part.
1 Answer Hello Jane. If the heater and the defrost thermostat read closed for continuity when cold, the timer is bad and will need to be replaced. You can test this with a multi-meter TJMA-DMT3. Here is a link on how to use a multi-meter. http://forum.appliancepartspros.com/oven-repair-including-ranges-cooktops/4810-how-check-continuity-ohmmeter.html Read More...

Paul July 29, 2011 for Model Number TFX24RGD I purchased a defroster control new and I need to know which color code wire to which of the four prongs and their are numbers on the the control. we hooked the unite up and it runs the fan but does not go into a cooling cycle.
1 Answer Paul, Terminal #1 on the timer should have the neutral wire attached( usually white or orange), terminal #2 should have the wire to the defrost heater/ thermostat(usually blue) terminal #3 Should be the power into the timer from the cold control(usually gray or red) Terminal #4 should be the wire out to the compressor overload(usually red or black). Good Luck and Thanks Read More...
