Anris for Model Number ge TFX20JRBKWW

Unit very dirty underneath, cleaned coils very well and defrosted unit for 2 days, Check heater by unpluging and ohm meter did not move off 1. I want to keep it simple stupid {kiss} and hope this test was ok before cutting wires, please advise. I have back freezer cover off and plugged unit back in to see what we get. Freezer was at 20degrees and fridge was at 50, not good on fresh food side. hoping the cleaning and defrosting will help, what are your thoughts please? Anris

Anris, The cleaning of the coils and defrosting unit will allow the unit to possibly work. You will want to keep an eye on the unit for frost building up on the coils and impacting the coils. If not defrosting properly then check the heater and thermostat for continuity and if there is no continuity then replace the part. If they both check ok then replace the timer.

Hello Harvey, This is a defrost issue. Realize that the fresh food side gets its' cool air from the freezer side. When the coils do not defrost, the air flow to the fresh food side is restricted so the fresh food side warms up. Fixing the defrost issue will correct the fresh food cooling issue. The most common failure on the Amana side-by-side units is the defrost thermostat (AP4247331) failing due to moisture getting inside it. This is located behind the rear freezer wall so you will have to unload the unit and shelves to remove the rear wall. The defrost thermostat is mounted to the top of the evaporator coils. You will need to defrost the unit completely with a hair dryer to restore normal operation.

Bukky, To replace the heater assembly WR51X10101, you will need to take the shelving out of the freezer and remove the rear cover of the freezer compartment. Once the cover is removed, exposing the evaporator, there will be 2 screws holding the heater in place. Remove the screw and slide out the heater. Install the new heater, one of the wires will be rerouted to the opposite side and connect to the heater.

Ron for Model Number GSS23WGTA

I first noticed the freeze pops in the middle to lower section of the freezer were liquid, but I thought they may have recently been put in. The next day they were still liquid and the meat in the bottom was thawed, but the meat at the top was frozen. The next day I realized the fridge side was cool but not cold. Now everything has been moved out and the unit is unplugged. I did notice some frost on the back of the freezer before all of this happened. What is the first thing to check and how do I check it? This is a SxS GE GSS23WGTA WW that is 6 to 7 years old. I am the original owner, but it came with the new construction house.

Hello Ron. Make sure the evaporator coils in the freezer are frosted over from top to bottm, but not frozen and clogged. If only a small part is, then you have a seald system issue and will need a hvac tech. If the unit is frozen over, then It sounds like you may have a defrost problem with the unit. Check and see if there is any frost build up on the back wall of the freezer. If so, you will need to test the defrost heater and the defrost thermostat. They should read closed for continuity when cold. You can test this with a multi-meter TJMA-DMT3. I will include a link at the end to assist you how to use the multi-meter if needed. If both parts are good, you will need to replace the defrost timer. Once the problem is repaired, you will need to thaw out the ice on the coils before the unit will operate properly. http://forum.appliancepartspros.com/oven-repair-including-ranges-cooktops/4810-how-check-continuity-ohmmeter.html

JL, This unit does not have a defrost timer as it incorporates into the main control board an automatic defrost control. If the unit is not defrosting and the heater and limiter check ok, then you will want to check the thermistor that is on the evaporator coils. This thermistor when in ice should read approximately 42.5K ohms of resistance. If not then you will need to replace the thermistor. It may be necessary to replace the control board as well.

Mark, The heater coil WR51X10101 is installed by removing the back wall of the freezer compartment. If you installed the WR51x10055 heater bracket, this is the same as the heater coil.
