The Defrost Heater is an OEM part for GE refrigerators. It plays a crucial role in the defrost system by heating the evaporator coil to melt any frost buildup. This ensures that the refrigerator operates efficiently by preventing ice accumulation that can obstruct airflow and cooling.

Over time, defrost heaters can fail due to factors such as electrical issues, prolonged use, or thermal stress. When the defrost heater malfunctions, frost can accumulate excessively on the evaporator coils, leading to cooling problems.

Symptoms of a bad defrost heater include:

  • Frost buildup on the evaporator coils
  • Inadequate cooling in the refrigerator or freezer compartments
  • The refrigerator running continuously without cycling off
  • Water leakage inside the refrigerator due to melting frost

This GE replacement part is also compatible with Hotpoint, RCA, and some Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Ge Defrost Heater (Part Number: OEM6214401)

1 Answer

Nana, Those are all the components that are in the defrost circuit. You could possibly have a door seal failure that is causing frost build-up. If you had a lot of ice build up when you replaced these parts you should have manually defrosted the ice

Peter for Model Number TFH22PRSAWW

I've recently replaced the defrost heater, thermostat, and timer in my refrigerator but am still having frost issues. Today I manually moved the timer into defrost mode and watched the heater. The top heater glows about twice as brightly as the bottom heater and felt like it was giving off more heat. Is this intentional since the bottom heater looks to be warming about half as many coils as the top heater, or should they be glowing the same and giving off equal heat? Thank you.

1 Answer

Peter, the heaters can have a different amount of heat output as they have different resistances. The defrost heater with the blue wire going to it should measure 7O and the heater with the pink wire going to it should measure 14O of resistance. It would be recommended that the door gaskets (the manufacturer has discontinued the door gaskets, the universal gasket kit TJ90SU2004 may work) are inspected for the possibility of an air leak as well as identifying if the thermostat (part number WR9X499 has been discontinued by the manufacturer) is opening contacts once the proper temperature is reached.

Heidi, If you remove the lower drawer and shelving, at the back of the unit just below where the back wall is there is a drain hole that you will want to make sure that it is not clogged. This will be the most likely cause and would need to flush it with hot water.

Freebird for Model Number GE model TFX20JRXD refrigerator

I have a GE model TFX20JRXD refrigerator. A year or two ago, the defrost heater/thermostat went bad. Replaced it with Part # AP2071464. Worked fine until a week or so after I moved it to a different location. Then it quit cooling on the refrigerator side and frosted up on the back of the freezer. Inspected the unit and found the bottom heater was burnt out. Replaced it again with AP2071464. (Includes both heaters and thermostat) Worked ok for about a week, then the same problem of refrigerator not cold enough and back of freezer frosted over. Upon inspection this time however, neither heater shows signs of being burnt out. I next replaced the defrost timer with part # WR9X489. It went into defrost mode as soon as I restored power from changing the timer and seemed to work great again for about two weeks, then the same problem of refrigerator not cold enough and back of freezer frosted over. Inspected unit again. This time, the upper coils are not very frosted over but the lower ones are a block of ice. I left the panel off, restored power, and manually turned the defrost timer until it kicked into defrost mode. I viewed the heaters when in defrost mode. Both upper and lower heaters seem to come on but the upper one burns very bright and seems to put out a lot of heat while the lower one is much dimmer and doesn't seem to put out much heat. By the time the defrost cycle is over, the upper coils are completely defrosted but the lower ones are still iced over. Any suggestions as to what would cause this?

Freebird, Based on the description, it sounds like the lower element may be weak and causing the issue. You would want to replace the heating element.

Worked ok for about a week, then same problem of refrigerator not cold enough and back of freezer frosted over. Upon inspection this time however, neither heater shows signs of being burnt out. My suspicion is that the defrost heater hasn't kicked on since being replaced and it took it a week to frost back up to the point of not cooling. Since part # AP2071464 included the thermostat, it seems unlikely to be the problem. So this seems to leave the timer as the next likely culprit. Would you agree?

Free bird, With having a good heater and thermostat already in the unit then yes the defrost control would be the issue with the unit. The timer part number is WR9X489.

Doug for Model Number GE TFX20JRBAWW

Hello, I recently purchased a replacement defrost heater, part WR51X442 (also AP2071464), part 230 in the diagram for freezer section 04. The new one was actually 2 bracket heaters. It came with a piece of paper that said "You must install 2 even if only 1 heater is bad, or it will quickly burn out." The problem is, I only have 1 heater! I had a.p.p. chat help verify I got the right part--it does replace an older model--but for the life of me I cannot find the second heater, and if I follow all the wiring it comes up from the 1 heater to the harness that includes the thermostat. Seems like there really is only 1. I could jury rig the heater in there somehow, I suppose; any ideas on what I'm doing wrong or what I could do? Thank you

1 Answer

Hello Doug. Maybe you are providing the wrong model number. The model number you provided is a 2 heater model number.
