Wondering if my unit has thermistors in the freezer side which would affect the defrost cycle? The defrost works, but runs too long (or too hot?), causing the ice in the ice bucket to partially melt (and then refreeze once the fridge starts back up). I'm hearing that thermistor(s) may control how long a defrost cycle runs. But the only thing vaguely thermistor-like I'm seeing in the evaporator coil area is two dangling probe-looking things that have a single wire attached to each. One probe is grey colored plastic, and the other one has white plastic. Identical to what can be seen in the video about replacing the defrost thermostat: http://www.appliancepartspros.com/ge-defrost-thermostat-wr50x122-ap2071262.html The probes can be seen at about 5:39 into the video (and earlier also). They are dangling back behind the action of the video, against the back wall of the freezer. BTW, I've recently replaced the defrost thermostat and defrost timer in this unit because I thought that the defrost cycle wasn't defrosting good enough previously. Now it's working a little too well! If thermistors don't appear to be the issue, what else could it be? The unit gets cold enough between defrost cycles, so I know I have plenty of good cooling action.

Roy, This unit will not have a defrost sensor on it and would only be the defrost heater, defrost thermostat and defrost timer on this unit. For this issue the defrost timer will most likely be the issue with the unit. The part number is WR9X489.

Bob, Because there is a smaller section above the lower coils the lower heater will not get quite as hot as the top element so this will be a normal issue. If the coils were iced up but never thawed it will take more time for it to get back to normal.

Fridge has been showing condensation at times. Now food section is in the 50s or 60s. Freezer now up to about 20. I hear timer is running. I can click it to defrost, and defrost works. The condensate drain is clear on freezer side. Cool air going into fridge at top and a few side vents. I recently cleaned the coils in the back. Today I happened to touch the fridge sidewall and it was very warm (maybe 80 or 90?) but it didn't last long. Is it maybe a timer? It seems hard to get to, but the knob is accessible. The ice maker chute seems to get frosty with hairy ice sometimes. Very awesome fridge in general! Hate to see it go. I had some similar problems in the summer, but they seemed to be fixed by cleaning the coils and clearing the drain.

Justin, You will want to make sure that the condenser fan is running. If it is then check the evaporator coils for a frost pattern. If there is very little frost on the evaporator coils then this would be a sealed system issue and would need a service tech.

Blacksmith, With having the heater, thermostat and defrost timer replaced and just the lower half of the coils are frosting up would be a indication that there is a sealed system type issue. This would either be a low charge or a restriction and would require to have a service technician to repair.

Mike, With the unit fan constantly running, you will want to check the unit for a defrost issue. If the coils are impacted with ice then you will want to test the defrost thermostat and heater. If they test good for continuity then the defrost timer would be the issue. If they do not then replace the part with no continuity.

Rubyfocus, The wires that are just hanging loose may be wires used for defrost testing purposes but does not show on the tech sheet for the unit.

I received a replacement Defrost control timer (AP2061695) and Defrost thermostat (AP2071262) yesterday (05/01/14) and wanted to test them before I tried installing them. Based on my efforts, I can find no evidence of continuity with either. I have a Craftsman 82345 Multimeter and when set to "CONTINUITY TEST" the meter goes from "1." to ".000" if I touch the two probes together (as expected). For the Timer, if I touch 1 with one probe and then any other (4, 3, or 2) with the other probe, I see no change from "1." on the meter. For the Thermostat, I left it in a cup of ice water for over 10 minutes (checking every few minutes) trying to see if there is a change from "1." on the meter and there is none. So can it be that both sealed parts I received are defective or I am doing something wrong?

1 Answer

Hello Ulysses. You are testing the parts wrong. On the timer, it should read closed across 3 and 4. Then if you turn it to a defrost cycle, 4 will become open and the others will read closed. As for the thermostat, you need a glass full of ice, with the thermostat in the middle and just enough water to cover the ice, but not float. Then after 10 to 15 min it should close the thermostat.

Raj, We can't find any information with the model number you supplied. In general, your issue sounds like an air flow problem. You'll want to check and make sure there are no articles hanging over the sides of the shelves or against the back wall, this will trap the air in the lower area and cause things to freeze in the lower bins. Check the upper shelf, make sure there's nothing blocking the control panel grille, this could also re direct the air down the back of the compartment, and check any air control levers and reset to mid range. If you need more assistance, please repost your request with a proper and complete model number. Thanks
