For Ge Refrigerator Defrost Thermostat (Part Number: OEM6213795)

Ted, It sounds like the defrost timer may be sticking when coming out of the defrost cycle. The defrost should last approximately 30 minutes and may be lasting longer. You would want to check to see if the fans are running at the time the unit stop cooling and if they are not then behind the light shield in the refrigerator is where the timer is. Turn the timer and see if the unit comes on. If it does then replace the timer.

Hello Dean. You need to check for a solid frost pattern on the coils inside the freezer. If the coils are not covered completely in the freezer with frost, this is a sign of a sealed system issue and you will need an HVAC tech to repair the unit. Usually with a defrost issue, the freezer works fine, but the fresh food does not. In your case, both are not working. This can be from a sealed system issue, or a fan motor not running in the unit.

Hello aandwe. Remove all food and shelves from the freezer. Then remove the screws securing the back panel and pull the panel out of the front of the unit. Now you can access the heater and thermostat for replacement.

Hello Tricia. It sounds like you may have a defrost problem with the unit. Check and see if there is any frost build up on the back wall of the freezer. If so, you will need to test the defrost heater and the defrost thermostat. They should read closed for continuity when cold. You can test this with a multi-meter TJMA-DMT3. I will include a link at the end to assist you how to use the multi-meter if needed. If both parts are good, you will need to replace the defrost timer. Once the problem is repaired, you will need to thaw out the ice on the coils before the unit will operate properly. http://forum.appliancepartspros.com/oven-repair-including-ranges-cooktops/4810-how-check-continuity-ohmmeter.html

Hello Jane! Defrost thermostat part number WR50X122 is not the thermostat used on your model. Your model TFF20DB* uses defrost thermostat part number WR50X55. Thanks.

Hello Jane. Pull out the unit and remove the back cover off the bottom of the unit. Then you can see the condenser coils and the fan motor under there.

My original problem was that ice was building on the back of the freezer panel and the refrigerator was not cooling. I replaced the defrost heaters and the unit worked great for ~1 1/2 weeks and then it all started again only the ice build up was even worse. I then replaced AP2639498, the defrost thermostat, and AP2635479, the defrost timer. Everything worked great but then I noticed tremendous ice build up on the floor of the freezer. After I removed all the ice, the drain hole must have been plugged and once I cleared it all seemed fine; however, the freezer seems to be running all the time. I checked my electric usage/day and it is about double what it was last year. The thermostat was not shaped like the old one, it has a flat bottom and the old one was curved to fit over the piping...could this be the problem? The timer has no moving parts and is not adjustable.

Hello Jane, The defrost thermostat turns off the defrost heater when the coil compartment reaches 50°F. This means that the defrost thermostats' job is basically to prevent defrosting the food in the freezer every time the unit goes through a defrost cycle. It's much more likely that you have a door seal leaking or the compressor is becoming inefficient with age. You can clean the condenser coils and make sure there is nothing blocking air flow across the condenser coils. There should be at least 3 inches between the back of the unit and the wall and there should be an inch across the top of the unit so the sealed system can dissipate the heat removed from the unit into the room. You might also check the condenser fan blade for lint build-up on the leading edges of the fan blade.

Hello sherif. Based on the information you provided, it sounds like the main control board WR55X10942C is bad and will need to be replaced in the unit. This is the timer for the defrost cycle.

Freezer is building up ice on the back wall and when I removed the back panel of the freezer the ice was also built up around the wiring above the heaters. The refrigerator was not cooling well. I have replaced the defrost heaters and the refrigerator cooled for about 1 1/2-2 weeks and now ice is building up again and the refrigerator is once again not cooling. The fan is working well. From what I'm reading I will probably have to also replace either the defrost timer and/or thermostat. I did not see my model number in the list.
