The Oven Thermostat is an OEM part for GE ovens. This thermostat is a component in regulating the oven's heat, turning the heat on and off to maintain the desired temperature setting. With its precise calibration and durable construction, the oven thermostat is essential for achieving consistent cooking outcomes and preventing overheating, which could lead to burnt or undercooked food.

Causes of a bad oven thermostat include prolonged use, which can affect its sensitivity, and exposure to extreme temperatures, which may impact its accuracy.

Symptoms of a bad Oven Thermostat include:

  • The oven not reaching the set temperature
  • Oven temperature fluctuating too widely from the desired setting
  • Food not cooking evenly or within expected time frames

This OEM GE part is also compatible with Hotpoint, RCA, and some Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Ge Oven Thermostat (Part Number: OEM7869228)

Don, It sounds like it could be a bad igniter but you will want to test the system to make sure of the correct part failure. Test for 3.2-3.6 volts AC at the gas safety valve with the igniter turned on. If the voltage is there, you have a bad safety valve. If the voltage is low, you have a weak igniter and the igniter will need to be replaced. You can test this with a multi-meter TJMA-DMT3. Here is a link on how to use a multi-meter. http://forum.appliancepartspros.com/oven-repair-including-ranges-cooktops/4810-how-check-continuity-ohmmeter.html

Sandra, You can test the thermostat by check across the red and yellow wires for 120 vac. If there is 120 vac then the thermostat is faulty and needs to be replaced. If there is not 120 vac then you would need to check your oven control and bake igniter.

Hello Kathy, Since thermostats are not polarized, either wire can be connected to either side. The switch will not know the difference. If you hook it up and it is working, you can swap the wires positions and try it again and it will work. As long as the second wire is long enough to reach the terminal to connect it, it will work normally.

Hello Mike, You should check your valve control assembly WB19K10044 to see if it has failed. Oven valve should have a resisitance of approximately 1.5 ohms. If it does not have proper ohms or is open then replace.

Hello Don, You should check your wiring from the thermostat to the ignitor to make sure that the wiring is good and is not completing circuit to ground. If all wiring checks ok then you would want to replace the thermostat WB20K8.

Hello D.R., yes you are correct. Part# WB20K8 is the right thermostat for your model. Sometimes you can find your model by leaving off the last couple digits, which usually indicate a color. Try searching JGBS15GER and you should get a list of models to choose from. Most of the time the "WH" or color indicator will not show. Thanks!

Roy, The thermostat is the least likely issue at this point. A weak igniter WB13K21 is the most likely issue at this point. When you start the bake cycle, the igniter should be glowing "white" hot in 60 to 90 seconds. This produces an amp draw of 3.2 to 3.6 amps on the igniter circuit, and 3.2 to 3.6 VAC to the safety valve. When this is achieved, the safety switch opens and the gas is ignited. Based on your post, the igniter is glowing, but not hot enough to open the valve. Thanks
