This PTCR is the compressor's start device for select refrigerators. It helps the compressor start smoothly by momentarily boosting the start winding, then automatically reduces current as the motor reaches speed.

  • Provides initial start assist to the compressor, then self-resets
  • A failing PTCR can cause clicking, repeated start attempts, warm temperatures, or the compressor not running
  • Helps protect the compressor by limiting inrush current during startup
What's included: One PTCR start device only Install notes:
  • Disconnect power before servicing; allow components to cool
  • Note wire positions and orientation before removal
  • Inspect compressor terminals for heat damage and ensure firm connections
  • If the old device shows signs of overheating, also check the overload and wiring

Hello Greg. See if the clicking is coming from the compressor. If so, the compressor is starting to fail on the unit.

Dack for Model Number CTX21EAZHRWW

Moved refrigerator to the garage because we got a new one for the kitchen. Plugged it in everything was normal. Ran in the garage for about 15 hours or so, not sure if it was kicking on and off like it was suppose to because it was running when I went to bed and running when I left for work the next morning. Got home from work went to grab a beer out and could tell that the frig had been off for awhile. Noticed that the GFCI on the other side of the garage was tripped. All my plugs (4 total) are on one 20 amp circuit along with the one GFCI plug (per code for the town I live in). Reset the plug and plugged the frig back in and it tripped again. Tried this several times and got the same result, even after I made sure nothing else was plugged in at any of the locations in the garage. Ran a small cord in the house to another plug (no GFCI on this circuit) still nothing. Ran a heavier duty cord (12/3 AWG) in the house and only thing that happened different is that the light came on in the frig when I opened the door. Any suggestions on what may be wrong????

Hello Dack. The unit can not run on a GFCI outlet. As for just the light on, it is most likely in defrost cycle. Leave it plugged in for about 30 minutes in a non GFCI and see if it comes back on and cools. If so, the GFCI is the issue.

After running for some hours the compressor stops while the fans continue before any shutoff due to reaching temperature. I can see the lights dim slightly about every 30 seconds so it seems to be trying to start again. Checking the compressor one finds it very hot and not running (much hotter than when running for hours). Unplug unit and wait for 15 minutes then it always starts and continues to run for a few hours but then will stop again. It will go through defrost cycle and then restart on its own at that point. I checked the relay and overload and they test to nominal ohm readings when the unit compressor had stalled. Could it be the relay or compressor. All evidences indicates the overload did not trip as the compressor seems stalled and is very hot to the touch after this has happened.

Chris, If the unit is trying to start right after the compressor shuts off then it is not the relay causing the issue. Double check to make sure that the condenser fan is running and the condenser coils are clean. If these check ok then it sounds like the thermostat may be at faulty trying to restart the compressor when the unit had just shut off for reaching temp. Also check the door seals for a good seal.

Henri, Don't cut anything, There are two(2) components involved, the overload WR08X10006 which attaches to the top pin and the PTC WR08X10006 which attaches across the two(2) lower pins on the compressor casing. You will need to dismount the overload in order to replace and mount the PTC. Reverse the procedure(install and wire the PTC then install the overload).

Hello Courtney. If you just replace the parts, and the compressor starting clicking again, you will need to replace the compressor, it is bad. If it has been some time since you replaced the parts, then they could have failed again.

Vince for Model Number GE Profile Performance Refrigerator Model# TFX28PBBEWW

I found that the PTCR rattled when I pulled it off, but resistance values were 0.6 ohms on the left side (power in #2) and about 3.0 ohms on #3 (connector numbers on the TI 8EA801 PTCR). I was getting the click, humm a few seconds, then click with no cooling to refrigerator, i.e. it didn't seem like compressor was running. I went from 117V to about 102V when it was humming. I also showed low resistance on both windings. Everyone seems to mention the rattling as bad. I am planning on buying the PTCR. Should I automatically buy the overload relay, even though it showed continuity with a low resistance across it?

1 Answer

Vince, The PTCR WR07X10099 Has no moving parts internally, so a "rattle" indicates a failed component. We would reccomend you "play" it safe and replace both parts WR08X10006, most experienced repair persons do.

Hello Miguel, The contact point they were referring to is the socket end of he relay where the relay plugs onto the pins on the side of the compressor. In other words, the female side of the relay.
