The Defrost Thermostat is an OEM part for GE refrigerators. It plays a critical role in the refrigerator's defrost system, preventing frost build-up on the evaporator coils by turning the defrost heater on and off at appropriate times. This component is designed to sense the temperature of the evaporator coils and activate the defrost heater when the coils get too cold, ensuring efficient operation and optimal cooling performance.

Symptoms of a bad Defrost Thermostat include:

  • Excessive frost or ice accumulation in the freezer compartment
  • The refrigerator or freezer section becoming too warm
  • The defrost heater not activating, leading to reduced efficiency

Causes of a bad defrost thermostat can include damage from moisture or ice, electrical failures within the thermostat, or simply wear and tear from regular use.

This GE replacement part is also compatible with Hotpoint, RCA, and some Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Ge Defrost Thermostat (Part Number: OEM11652966)

Hello Roger, The job of the defrost thermostat is to turn the defrost heater off when the evaporator compartment reaches about 50°F. This prevents the food in the freezer from defrosting during the defrost cycle, (protects the food). This unit had an issue with the defrost heater not turning off properly under certain conditions. This design provided two cutoff thermostats for the heater to prevent liner damage/food loss.

Ty, You will want to check the door seals for any air leaks. Check the vent that is on the side of the refrigerator wall on the left side to make sure that it is not blocked in any way. If this checks ok then it sounds like you may have received a defective thermostat.

Scott for Model Number HTS18GBRERWW

I have a Hotpoint HTS18GBRERWW fridge. I have noticed occasionally food in the freezer seemed to have thawed a bit. I recently replaced the evaporator fan motor because it was making noise, and I was hoping that it was also the cause of the warming problem since it perhaps wasn't spinning adequately. The fridge and freezer were working quiet and cold for a few hours so I had placed food back in. Couple hours later I notice the back inside of the freezer was hot and food was starting to thaw. I am wondering what part to replace, defrost thermostat or timer, or both? I have read the thermostat is supposed to keep the defrost heater from getting to warm so it is my main guess since it doesn't seem to be kicking the heater off. I would appreciate your input.

Hello Scott. You need to check and see if the unit is sticking in the defrost cycle. If so, then the timer WR9X502 is bad and will need to be replaced.

Tony, If both of the thermostats have no continuity but are below 15 degrees then you would need to replace both thermostats.

Bret, When you turn the unit down to 0 on the dial and the unit continues to run then the issue would be with the contacts in the control thermostat sticking. The part that you will want to replace is WR09X20002.

Concertna for Model Number GTS18EBMBRWN

My freezer compartment is fine, but my refrigerator compartment became envious in some manner and began to freeze the food in the refrigeration compartment, including the vegetable bins. Thorough cleanings; coils, drains, vents, knobs; produces no change. Unplugging the unit and allowing the temperature to stabilize somewhat does help the monetary damage and my frustration, but not the unit. The fan motor is constantly running. It does click in the upper range when turning the temperature set knob to indicate cycling into the defrost mode. However, even when set to below the "0" set, and should be off, the unit continues to run and freeze everything. Unfortunately, it does not respond to threats of a taser and "Stop, Freeze" does not seem appropriately applicable. The issue at hand is a simple one; which part is wanting ? Replacement is mechanical. Your expertise is of incaclulable worth, bought only with years of hands on knuckle busting, back cramps and kibuzting clients! ; ) Thank you for your kind assistance. Hello. No, the defrost thermostat WR50X10071 is used for the defrost cycle. The temp control WR09X20002 or the defrost timer WR09X10041 can cause the fan motor not to run, but if one of these are bad, the compressor will not run also.

Jay, Replacing the defrost thermostat is relatively easy. The hardest part of the repair is accessing the evaporator and thermostat. You'll need to remove everything from the freezer, unplug the power cord, or turn power off to the fridge, and remove the rear wall of the freezer compartment. As long as you're carefull and take your time, you'll do fine. Good Luck and Thanks
