The Defrost Thermostat is an OEM part for GE refrigerators. It plays a critical role in the refrigerator's defrost system, preventing frost build-up on the evaporator coils by turning the defrost heater on and off at appropriate times. This component is designed to sense the temperature of the evaporator coils and activate the defrost heater when the coils get too cold, ensuring efficient operation and optimal cooling performance.

Symptoms of a bad Defrost Thermostat include:

  • Excessive frost or ice accumulation in the freezer compartment
  • The refrigerator or freezer section becoming too warm
  • The defrost heater not activating, leading to reduced efficiency

Causes of a bad defrost thermostat can include damage from moisture or ice, electrical failures within the thermostat, or simply wear and tear from regular use.

This GE replacement part is also compatible with Hotpoint, RCA, and some Kenmore models.

For Ge Defrost Thermostat (Part Number: OEM11652966)

John Y for Model Number GTH17JBDDRBB

Hi. My fridge compartment is warm, but the freezer seems to work. I took the back panel of the freezer out, and found the evaporator coils frozen up in heavy frost. I suspect either the fan or the defrost thermostat needs replacing. To my surprise though, there are two defrost thermostats wired in series, both look alike, but have different numbers. And sure enough, your parts diagram shows two thermostats, #AP3884319 and #AP3884320. Why are there two? How do they work together? And how do I tell which one is bad if either are? Thank you.

1 Answer

John, Check the thermostats for continuity. They are both just safety thermostats to make sure that the unit does not overheat when the unit goes into defrost.

Helmut, the condenser coils would need to be checked to ensure that they are clean and not clogged up by dust. If the condenser coils are clear, the next step would be to inspect the evaporator in the freezer section to identify if it is blocked up with ice or not. If it is not, or there is not a light frost coating on all of the evaporator coils, there may be a sealed system failure that would require an EPA certified individual to diagnose and repair.

Pierre, Apart from the defrost thermostat not staying on long enough, I would consider replacing the heating element assembly, part number is WR51X445. You may have a bad connection at the heater or a wiring issue.

Tim, your unit will only have one thermostat control [WR49X26875]. If the defrost control [WR55X21623] has failed and the thermostat is opening and closing the circuit properly, then only the defrost control would need to be changed out.

I received information from you for the model GTT18BBT2RCC about the replacement of the defrost thermostat. ANSWER Jorge, For the if the refrigerator is getting too cold then this would not be caused by a faulty defrost thermostat. If the temp is getting too warm and it is a defrost issue then you would need to use both defrost thermostats. This is by design of the manufacturer. If I need to replace it and i have to use the two thermostats ... both are equal or there is some difference between them. I can buy two of the same part number

Jorge V for Model Number GTT18BBT2RCC

I have low temperature problems in my refrigerator and the freezer freezes. I check the resistance and it's good. I found that in the line of the evaporator I have 2 thermostats connected in series and I do not understand why two if most refrigerators have only one. The question is ... Can I replace both thermostats with just one? or I must put two to keep the circuit with the same properties. Please, if I can replace it for only one ... what do you recommend?

Hello Mohamed. If the issue appears to be in the temp control, it has been discontinued. If it is sticking in defrost, you will need to replace the defrost board WR55X21623 on the unit.
