The Water Filter Bypass is an OEM part for LG refrigerators. It is used when you choose not to use a water filter in your refrigerator. This bypass plug allows water to flow directly to the dispenser and ice maker without being filtered, ensuring continuous operation even when a filter is not installed.

Causes of a bad water filter bypass can include damage to the bypass plug, clogging from debris, or wear and tear over time. If the bypass plug is not functioning properly, it can disrupt the water flow and lead to issues with the ice maker and water dispenser.

Symptoms of a bad water filter bypass include:

  • Reduced water flow or no water flow to the dispenser
  • Ice maker not producing ice
  • Water leaks around the bypass plug area

This OEM LG part is also compatible with Sears/Kenmore.

Jon, the manufacturer is not listing a bypass plug for this model. As this is the case, the filter should be able to be removed and the unit should operate normally.

Susan, the filter should be able to be removed and the unit work appropriately. Both filters being in place can certainly cause the water pressure to be too low for the valve to open properly. The reverse osmosis system is going to drop the pressure by a minimum of 5 PSI and the filter would drop it another 3 to 5 PSI. As there is 30PSI going to the reverse osmosis system, the pressure drop would bring the PSI below the minimum requirements of the valve. It would be recommended that the refrigerator water supply be installed before the reverse osmosis system to allow for the valves to operate as properly as possible. The manufacturer recommends a minimum of 40PSI going to a reverse osmosis system that is installed before the valve water supply.
