Hello Tony, While this is not a very easy job, this filter housing WP2209022 is fully accessible from the front of the unit without pulling it from the installation.

This isn't so much a question as a tip. I have a KitchenAid counter depth fridge that uses this water filter housing. There is a front panel bar that prevents the housing from coming through the front. Because there wasn't a lot of good info on how to do this... I tried some options that people presented on the Interwebs: 1 -- I tried removing the doors to get at the panel, but it turns out it is riveted in place. 2 -- I also tried elevating the front of the fridge to get at it from the bottom of the fridge, but no luck -- there's a steel panel on the bottom. 3 -- I also tried cutting the plate a little with a Dremel, but it's still very hard to get even a skinny arm in the front opening to disconnect the tubes. SO, it turns out that if you pull off the back panel door (DUH, do I feel stupid) and remove an electrical part by the water collection tray (there's only one, and it's screwed on), you can remove the housing that way (provided you remove the screws at the front of the fridge). I would have saved a TON of time if this info was available somewhere online, so I hope it helps someone else with a similar fridge.

Hello Hung. If you can not remove it from the front or back, then lean the fridge backwards and support it on wooden blocks. Then take the filter housing out of the bottom of the unit.

Hello C. If you can not drop the housing out from the bottom of the unit, then you will need to remove that front bar. In most cases you don't have to remove that, but some customers say they have had to.

Hello C. It does not give ample room, but you can succeed. You will need to get assistance to help gently tilt the unit back and use a couple 4x4 blocks to rest the front roller wheels onto. This will allow better access. Watch this video. It will give you an idea of how to replace the water filter housing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PvbfCpvrsY0

Hi, I asked a question about removing the water filter housing yesterday. I can easily remove the plastic grill at the bottom of the fridge. I can also remove the two screws at the bottom of the filter housing. The problem is that the filter housing is bigger than the hole in the metal panel along the bottom of the fridge. And the metal panel appears to be affixed by many small bolts and some big bolts that support the weight of the doors! I can't see any way to get the filter housing out of the front. What am I missing? thanks!

Hello Robert. If you release the lines from the back of the filter housing, it will pull out the front of the unit without removing that bar. The only way it wouldn't is if that bar was bent. Then you will need to fix the bar to remove the housing.

My refrigerator sprays water when I remove the filter. I assume this is a bad filter housing? Unfortunately, I can't get the housing out of the unit. The plastic housing flange is partially behind a steel panel that runs across the bottom of the refrigerator. It's different than your videos for similar Whirlpool filters where the filter housing is on the outside of the steel planel. (I can't try the block trick. This is a counter-depth unit that has "settled" and gotten "fat" over the ~9 years we've owned it and is stuck in the cabinet! We'll have to have cabinet work done when it needs to be replaced.)

Hello Robert, This repair can be completed from the front of the unit by removing the kick panel. You just have to reach under the unit to remove the retaining screws and pull the filter housing out to remove the water lines.
