The Oven Igniter is an OEM part for Whirlpool ovens responsible for igniting the gas burner that heats the oven. It works by drawing electrical current through the igniter filament, heating it to a high temperature until it glows and ignites the gas to start the cooking process.

Symptoms of a failing Oven Igniter include:

  • Oven not heating up at all
  • Igniter glowing without igniting the gas
  • Weak flame or delayed ignition
  • Increased gas smell

Causes of a bad Oven Igniter can range from normal wear and tear, which reduces the igniter's efficiency over time, to physical damage or a buildup of dirt and grease that can interfere with its operation. A malfunctioning igniter can lead to uneven cooking, wasted gas, and in some cases, safety hazards due to the accumulation of gas without ignition.

This OEM Whirlpool part can also be used on Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore/Sears brand appliances.

Roae, The most likely cause for the oven to make a loud pop would be caused by a air mixture issue. If the unit is on LP you will want to make sure that it has been converted to LP. Adjust the air shutters on the burners to correct this issue.

Sam, Your first check needs to be at the thermostat WPW10641988. You most likely have weak or loose contacts inside the thermostat, that intermittently "close" and cause the igniter to glow. The replacement part is a "kit" and fits several different model numbers. You will need to review and follow the instructions that come with the part.

Hello Roxi. You will mount the igniter in the same location as the old igniter and in the same direction as the old igniter. Should be close to the burner.

John, The minimum amp draw of a "flat style" oven igniter is 3.2 to 3.6 amps. Anything below 3.0 amps isn't going to work, replace the igniter and you should be fine.

Hello Dunny, This is normally caused by the burner having a stopped up hole where the ignitor should be lighting the gas. It can however, be caused by a bad gas valve.

Steve, The igniter could have gotten damaged in shipping, they are pretty fragile. You can check the igniter for 85 to 95 ohms resistance with a multi meter. Then you'll need to check for 120 VAC out from the clock to the igniter when a bake or broil selection is made. Because you have voltage into the clock, it doesn't mean you have voltage out of the clock.
