Symptoms of needing to replace the door latch assembly include:

  • Difficulty in properly closing or latching the dishwasher door
  • Leaks or water seeping out from around the door area
  • Visible signs of wear, damage, or cracks on the latch mechanism
  • The door not staying securely closed during operation

Causes of a faulty dishwasher door latch assembly can include normal wear and tear over time, physical damage due to impact or mishandling, or issues with the latch mechanism itself.

This OEM Whirlpool part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore dishwasher models.

For Whirlpool Door Latch Handle (Blk) (Part Number: OEM18046359)

David for Model Number Maytag MDBH945AWW"

Got a new latch mechanism to replace the failed one. Had trouble getting the wires off the buttons on the old latch so I tried to put the old buttons on the new latch. They disintegrated in the process. Now I'm trying to put the new buttons back on to the new latch. The push buttons will not seat unless I push the little studs in before I press the switches into place. But if I do this, the dishwasher does not let me the sterilize option or the normal cycle. Worse, it does not run. I pulled the buttons back off and did continuity tests on them. They conduct when the studs are NOT pushed in, so when they're in place on the handle (unless there is some installation trick I missed) they will be always off. I assume that means the contacts are NC or normally closed? Is it possible the pushbuttons are expected to be NO?

Kim, If you get a pair of needle nose pliers on the terminal just below the connector, then pry up and this should help the connector to pop loose from the terminal.
