The Start Switch is an OEM part for Whirlpool dryers. This switch initiates the dryer's cycle, signaling the dryer to begin its drying process. Made with precision to fit specific Whirlpool models, this start switch ensures reliability and performance. Over time, wear and tear or electrical issues can impact the switch's functionality, leading to potential problems with starting the dryer.

Causes of a bad start switch can range from electrical faults within the switch itself, wear and tear from repeated use, or physical damage that affects the switch mechanism.

Symptoms of a bad Start Switch include:

  • The dryer not starting when the start button is pressed
  • Intermittent operation or failure to maintain the cycle once started
  • Unusual noises when the start button is pressed

This OEM Whirlpool part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper and some Kenmore models.

Hello Audra, First put the ohm meter on the lowest setting where a horseshoe symbol appears. Touch the leads together to see what no resistance looks like and to ensure the meter is working properly. Now, with power disconnected from the unit, place one meter lead on one terminal and the other meter lead on the other terminal. It should read open at this point, just like not touching anything with the meter leads. The3 meter should read like touching the leads directly together when the button is depressed.

Rich, You will want to check the door switch to make sure that it is not broken and make sure that it has continuity when closed. If this checks ok then test the thermal fuse on the blower housing for continuity. If there is no continuity then it will need to be replaced and check the venting from the blower wheel to the outside of the home to make sure that there is continuity.
