The Start Switch is an OEM part for Whirlpool dryers. This switch initiates the dryer's cycle, signaling the dryer to begin its drying process. Made with precision to fit specific Whirlpool models, this start switch ensures reliability and performance. Over time, wear and tear or electrical issues can impact the switch's functionality, leading to potential problems with starting the dryer.

Causes of a bad start switch can range from electrical faults within the switch itself, wear and tear from repeated use, or physical damage that affects the switch mechanism.

Symptoms of a bad Start Switch include:

  • The dryer not starting when the start button is pressed
  • Intermittent operation or failure to maintain the cycle once started
  • Unusual noises when the start button is pressed

This OEM Whirlpool part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper and some Kenmore models.

Hello. You will need to test the thermal fuse, and the door switch on the unit. If good, then it sounds like the timer is bad and will need to be replaced on the unit.

Jim, the most likely issue is an "open" thermal fuse WP3392519 on the blue wire, it's mounted on the blower housing and opens in the event of a heating issue. You'll need to check the door switch circuit (com to NO should be a "closed" circuit when the switch plunger is pressed in or the door is closed)and the timer should have a "momentary closed circuit, when the dial is pressed in between the BK(black) terminal and the BU(blue) terminal of the timer.

Hello Dale, The motor would be the cause of the unit not working properly. When you push the start switch it just energizes the circuit for the motor to turn on. The Start switch is just a relay. Once the motor starts the centrifugal switch on the motor switches it from start to main. The only other thing that it could possibly be would be a bad connection at the motor of the harness that is connected. Double check all wiring to make sure that there are no loose or broken wires.

OnMyOwn, Based on your post description, Since you can hear the timer, that indicates the timer and the door switch are OK,basically, and a bad start switch is not all that common. Where it me, I would start by checking the thermal fuse on the blower housing WP3392519 if the fuse opened due to a high heat situation or just failed, it would shut off the power to the motor and it won't start or run. Good Luck and Thanks
