Dryer quit working the other day. My wife reported hearing a pop while folding clothes, then the dryer quit. The breaker had tripped. I reset the breaker but the dryer wouldn't heat. I opened it up and the terminals had burned off the heater element and the wires were damaged. So I replaced the heater element and repaired/replaced the wiring. Still no heat. The thermal cutoff was bad, so I replaced it. Now the heat won't shut off, even on air fluff. Through other checking around, I discovered with the machine turned off, I can trip the centrifugal switch on the motor and the heater heats up. So, I'm thinking the heater control relay is bad on the control board. Do you agree? And can that relay be replaced, or am I stuck replacing the entire board?

1 Answer

Hello John. Make sure the element is not grounded out. If not, replace the board on the unit.

Jeff, You will want to test to see if there is 120 vac getting to the motor on the unit when you push the start button. If there is 120 vac then the issue will be the motor. If there is not power then the issue would most likely be the control board.

Tom, This issue would most likely be a thermostat or thermal fuse that has failed and you will want to check each of them to ensure that it is good. The code is not a valid code. If the thermostats check good for continuity then the issue will most likely be in the control board.

It takes 2 hours to dry a load of clothes. Even though the dryer light says they are dry the clothes are damp in the middle. I cleaned out the vent pipe, replaced the blower thermistor, the gas valve coils and tested the other parts related to heat problems. I did not replace the main control board because of the high cost. I don't know what else I can do to correct problem. This dryer has become a real lemon. These electronic parts they are using in dryers and washers are failing too soon rendering these machines useless. Other dryers I had without electronics lasted up to 25 years and the parts were easy to diagnose and replace. Please advise ?

Ted, Typically when a dryer takes longer than normal to dry then the issue would be a venting issue. Check the blower wheel to make sure that there is nothing clogged in it. If it is taking too long on auto cycle then it is possible that the moisture sensor or wiring to the sensor is faulty.

Hello Dirk, You should verify the power supply to the unit is correct and there are no loose connections at the wall outlet or dryer terminal block. If all checks good, check for 120Vac at the L1 terminal on the main board WPW10174745. If there is voltage there in reference to the terminal labeled neutral, check for voltage out of the board at terminal P9-1. If voltage is there when trying to start, The thermal fuse is a likely cause.

Hello Paul. It sounds like the venting system is clogged or kinked. You will need to check the vent and clean it out. Be sure and clean the vent pipe and the dryer air duct assembly. If the air flow is not good, the unit will retain moist air causing the clothes not to dry. Try running the unit with the vent unhooked from the back of the dryer and see if the dryer works properly.

Ben, You will want to check the venting of the unit from the blower wheel to the outside of the home to ensure that there is not clogging.

Hello Mike, Since the code is not on the tech sheet, this is most likely going to be an issue with the control board WPW10111620. The revision number is not normally considered because the correct board should be listed under the appliances model number.
