This thermostat is a temperature-sensitive safety switch that monitors heat and opens or closes the circuit at a set point. Replacing a failed thermostat restores reliable temperature protection and corrects issues caused by tripping or stuck contacts.

  • Monitors component/cavity temperature and trips at a preset limit
  • Opens (or closes) the electrical circuit to prevent overheating or activate cooling functions
  • Common symptoms: no heat or intermittent heating, unit won't start or shuts off during use, cooling/vent fan runs constantly or never turns on
  • Useful diagnostic clue: faulty thermostats may test open or stuck closed at room temperature
What's included: One thermostat Install notes:
  • Disconnect power at the breaker before servicing; if used in a microwave, be aware the high-voltage capacitor can retain a dangerous charge
  • Note wire locations; transfer one lead at a time and secure the thermostat in the original mounting position for proper sensing
  • Ensure clean metal-to-metal contact with the mounting surface; do not overtighten screws
  • After installation, restore power and verify normal operation

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Thermostat (Bimetal) (Part Number: OEM18069627)

1 Answer

Ken, If there is only a small section of frost on the evaporator and the compressor is running, then this will be a sealed system issue in which a service technician will be required to repair it.

Wbrunc, You will want to clean out all the ice from the floor of the freezer and flush the drain with hot water. Once this is done you can install a heat probe kit 819043 that will help keep the drain from freezing.

Alan, the thermostat is what turns the fans and compressor on and off. In your situation, they are running so the thermostat is not the problem. Anytime your compressor is running, you should have a frost pattern on the evaporator. It sounds like you have a sealed system problem, possibly a leak or inefficient compressor.

Joe for Model Number Kenmore R/F, 106,621152111

I was away from home for a few days and when I returned home I had noticed that there had been a power outage 36 hours prior to my return. The refrigerator was not operating. The refrigerator section was cool (not at normal temperature); the freezer section was above freezing and some items still had some ice in the packages but the liquid in the containers had thawed. Power was available to the Kenmore R/F so I rapped on the controls housing cover and the R/F started up & running. The R/F spaces cooled to near normal temperatures but I had to set the thermostat control to a slightly cooler setting to get normal temperatures. The R/F operated normally overnight but then I found it not running the next day and warming up again. I checked the compressor/condenser compartment for possible problems - none observed. With the power off, I opened the control panel compartment in the refrigerator section and examined the components (i.e. Adaptive Defrost module, Thermostat, etc.). I removed the Adaptive Defrost Control (PC) board examined it and wrote down the part numbers for reference. I did not see any anomalies concerning the PC board or T-stat. My concern is that the expensive Adaptive Defrost PC board may have been damaged (but no burn marks noticed on the PC board) during the power outage (perhaps a voltage spike occurrence). There is a "Sanyou" relay mounted on the PC board. If there is a problem with the relay, is the relay replaceable (available) rather than purchase a complete Adaptive Defrost Control - relays are generally much less expensive? Thanks in advance for any advice rendered.

Hello Joe, the cold control and the adaptive defrost board both control running/cooling in this model, Power goes from the board to the cold control, as far as the board, the relay contacts may be worn however the board is replaced as a single part, there are no components available for a board repair.

Francisco, It sounds like you may have a defrost problem with the unit. Check and see if there is any frost build up on the back wall of the freezer. If so, you will need to test the defrost heater and the defrost thermostat. They should read closed for continuity when cold. You can test this with a multi-meter TJMA-DMT3. I will include a link at the end to assist you how to use the multi-meter if needed. If both parts are good, you will need to replace the defrost timer. Once the problem is repaired, you will need to thaw out the ice on the coils before the unit will operate properly. http://forum.appliancepartspros.com/oven-repair-including-ranges-cooktops/4810-how-check-continuity-ohmmeter.html

Hello Stan. Make sure the condenser fan motor is running and the coils are clean. If not, replace the motor and clean the coils. If so, it sounds like an HVAC sealed system issue, and you will need an HVAC tech.
