The Upper Oven Thermal Fuse is an OEM part compatible with Whirlpool double wall ovens. Located near the upper oven heating element, this safety device protects the upper oven cavity from excessive heat rises. If temperatures get too high, the fuse automatically cuts power to prevent overheating.

Symptoms of a blown upper oven thermal fuse include:

  • The upper oven failing to heat or losing total heating function
  • Burning smells emanating from the upper oven cavity
  • Safety shutdown errors related to over-temperature conditions

Common causes are airflow restriction trapping heat or faulty wiring allowing overheating. Natural aging also deteriorates fuses over extended use cycles.

Compatible brands include KitchenAid, Jenn-Air and some Kenmore wall oven models.

Lola for Model Number RBD305PDT14

This is a Whirlpool double oven. Was starting to turn on the oven when it "beeped" then panel went black. It beeped two more times then doors locked as if in cleaning mode. Shut power off at breaker to unit to unlock. Understand this could be either the Thermal Override or a bad control board. any way to test which one? Have replaced the TOD once before a few years ago but that time it gave an error message. This time completely black screen. Thanks.

1 Answer

Lola, With the screen being completely dead and the unit locking itself, this issue would most likely be a faulty control board rather than a thermal overload.

Don, You will want to check the diode of the microwave to see if it is broken or blown. If the diode is bad it will cause a humming noise and no heat. Also check the resistance of the magnetron in which you should have less than .5 ohms resistance. Also check to make sure that the thermal fuse on the magnetron has continuity.

Henry for Model Number GBD307PDQ09

The oven display goes blank, but the buttons beep and the oven light turns on and off. After some time (usually days) the display will turn on and shows the correct time. After several hours or a day, the display will show the error codes E6 and F2 and then go blank again. This has happened several times, but now the display has been blank for a few weeks. If I try to turn the oven on I get one short beep, a long beep and then three short beeps. What is the most likely problem?

1 Answer

Henry, The F2 E6 error code is an indication that the Cancel key drive line is open. Check the keypad connector for a firm connection. Press cancel if the error code returns after 60 seconds replace the keypad. If not then replace the control board. This issue sounds like the control board WPW10438751 would be the problem.

Blaine, You will want to first check to make sure that there is power. Access the control board and check from L1 to bake to see if you are getting 240 vac with the unit set to bake. If you are then your control board is bad and will need to be replaced. If not then you will want to check to make sure that the thermal fuse is not open.

Hello Eric. Try removing the ribbon cable from the control board and clean it rubbing alcohol and see if it starts to work. If not, then the control panel 4451333 is bad on the unit. This part has been permanently discontinued by the manufacturer and we don't know of any source or replacement for the part.

Mark, If the control board has power getting to it then the thermal overload would not be the problem. You can test the thermal overload by doing a continuity test. No continuity means that it is bad but your problem will be in the control unit.

Hello Robert. You need to check and see if the relay is stuck causing the element to stay on and blow the fuse. If so, you will need to replace the control in the unit.
