The Water Inlet Valve is an OEM part for Whirlpool washing machines. It controls the flow of hot and cold water into the washer. This component is crucial for starting the wash cycle, as it opens to allow water to enter and closes to stop the flow once the appropriate level is reached, ensuring efficient wash performance.

Causes of a bad Water Inlet Valve can include mineral deposits and sediment build-up, which can obstruct the flow of water, or mechanical failure such as a broken solenoid that prevents the valve from opening or closing properly.

Symptoms of a bad Water Inlet Valve include:

  • Water not filling the tub at the beginning of the cycle
  • Water leaking from the valve
  • Washer not starting due to inability to fill
  • Unusual noises from the valve area during operation

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Water Inlet Valve (Part Number: OEM9283632)

Hope, Yes, you're going to need to replace the fill valve 285805 . Water dripping into or onto the tub assembly, is an indication of a faulty diaphragm or plunger inside the fill valve. This could be due to sediment in the water line, or mineral deposits in the water. It will get worse, eventually so you probably need to replace the valve as soon as possible.

Hello Roy, You should first remove the cold water supply hose from the back of the unit and check for screens that could be clogged. There is one screen in the water inlet of the valve that could be clogged. If it is removed, be sure to re-install it after cleaning to avoid replacing the valve in the near future since it protects it from mineral deposits and sedimentation in the water supply. If none of the screens are clogged, you will need to replace the water inlet valve.

Hello Wade. If you can stop the water from entering the machine by turning off the timer or unplugging the unit, you will need to look for a bad pressure hose or replace the pressure switch. If the only way to shut off the water is at the shut off for the water hoses, you will need to replace the water valve in the unit.

Hello Ron. Either the water hoses are on the wrong valve or the wires to the valve are wrong. You will need to check and see which is bad on the unit.

John K. for Model Number Whirlpool LBR4221EW0

My washer drips from what I think is the vacuum break (flat, white plastic plate near the rear of the top of the tub). It's a slow drip but enough to fill the tub with a couple of inches after a day. I suspect the inlet valve (285805) might be the part that's failing. If this is the likely part, is it a good practice to replace the vacuum break inlet hose (3357328) too? If I'm wrong about the inlet valve being the culprit, what other parts should I look at? I haven't had a chance to take the washer apart yet to take a look inside. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks...

Hello John. The vaccum break should be fine if it is not broken. You just need to replace the inlet valve on the unit.

9 yr old Maytag top load washer. The fill function does not shut off and overflows the tub. I have to turn off at spigot seems to be on the hot side only. Also a sqealing / whistle type sound happened once on the fill cycle. Last year Hot side supply hose screen was clogged and not letting hot water once we cleaned it out the machine operated fine until now. This is in a seasonal home and the machine operates on softened well water is used infrequently but lots of loads 5-6 times a year.

Fred, The post would indicate that the hot water solenoid plunger has stuck "open", and allows the washer to continually fill. As you found out, high pitched noises and squealing sounds during a fill cycle, is usually due to a water flow issue(clogged screens, high or low water pressure, etc.) the noise is the water attempting to flow through the diaphragm and valve body at the wrong pressure. Fill valve failures can occur at any time and can be due to various reasons, It's nothing you did or didn't do, and it's not really an issue in the washer or water supply.
