This time I replaced the front and rear bearings and thrust bearing and all the gears. The hardest part is thoroughly cleaning out all the old grease. After re-greasing and assembly mixer ran like new. I wish a more robust worm gear was available. A snap ring plier is a must for this job. Read more

Opened up transmission housing and removed all gearing to inspect for worn parts. The Professional 6 is all metal (except for the transmission housing cover) so just a couple of gears looked worn. Planetary needed adjustment, although the gearing was solid. Replaced the transmission housing cover with a new metal version. Cleaned out the old grease (all that grease...) and repacked the gears. The vertical shaft showed a slight bend so I replaced the bent shaft with a new shaft. I should have done that when I was replacing the gears. Although we have not mixed any more bread, I ran the mixer at a both low and high speeds for several minutes without any more gear clashing noises. It now purrs ! DID A FULL OVERHAUL on the KitchenAid Stand Mixer. I've had the mixer for over 25+ years and it finally stopped working. But instead of buying a new one, which is not made the same, I did an almost complete overhaul on this one.
