If the waveguide breaks or cracks, as can happen to plastic parts over time, it should be replaced to protect the mechanical workings of the microwave. Although the microwave can be used without the waveguide, it is not recommended.The waveguide is located inside the cooking area of the microwave over the control panel. It is a thin piece of material that may resemble cardboard. To start, disconnect the microwave from the wall outlet and use a screwdriver to remove the two screws holding the waveguide in place. Discard the broken waveguide and use the screws from the original waveguide to install the new one. Plug the microwave back into the outlet.
