Thermador Defrost Thermostat
Genuine Whirlpool part
By: Whirlpool
Part Number: WPW10225581

The Defrost Thermostat is an OEM part for Whirlpool refrigerators. It is responsible for monitoring the temperature of the evaporator coils. When the coils reach a certain temperature, the thermostat signals the defrost heater to turn on and melt any ice or frost buildup. This ensures proper airflow and prevents excessive ice formation.

Causes of a bad defrost thermostat can be attributed to normal wear and tear over time or electrical malfunctions.

Symptoms of a bad defrost thermostat include:

  • Excessive ice buildup in the freezer section.
  • Inadequate cooling in the refrigerator compartment.
  • Frost or ice accumulating on the evaporator coils.

This OEM Whirlpool part can also be used on Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore/Sears brand appliances.

This part fixes the following symptoms
  • Frost buildup
  • Freezer not defrosting
  • Freezer section too warm
  • Fridge too warm

Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You Fridge side wasn't staying cold massive ice build up in freezer ice blockage in fan duct   Christopher M. • Yorba Linda , CA • December 15, 2014

Condenser was encased in solid block of ice due to automatic defrost not working. Replaced thermostat and ADC control board. Working fine now. Most tedious part was using a heat gun to melt all the ice off the condenser coils. You will need a couple small wire nuts to splice the new thermostat into the existing harness (they are not included). Service tech wanted over $400 to repair, fixed it myself for half that. Thanks ! Thermador Defrost Thermostat (Bi-Metal)
Genuine Whirlpool part
By: Whirlpool
Part Number: WP2306462

This defrost bi-metal thermostat senses evaporator temperature during the defrost cycle and opens to stop heater power at the safe cutoff. Replacing a failed thermostat restores reliable defrosting and helps prevent ice buildup that restricts airflow and cooling.

  • Monitors evaporator temperature to control the defrost heater
  • Closes when cold to allow defrost; opens at cutoff to terminate defrost and prevent overheating
  • Helps maintain clear evaporator coils for proper airflow
  • Common symptoms: heavy frost on the back wall/evaporator, poor cooling, or defrost heater not energizing
What's included: One defrost thermostat Install notes:
  • Disconnect power before servicing; wear cut-resistant gloves
  • Access the evaporator; mount the thermostat in the original location with firm contact on the tubing
  • Transfer any original clip or insulation as found to ensure proper sensing
  • Secure all connections and route wiring away from the heater and moving parts; clear existing ice before restoring power

Thermador Defrost Heater (Evaporator)
Genuine Bosch part
By: Bosch
Part Number: 00369245

This defrost heater melts frost and ice from the evaporator to help restore normal airflow and cooling performance. It replaces a failed heater to reduce excessive frost buildup and repeated frost cycles. What it does:

  • Heats the evaporator during the defrost cycle so accumulated frost and ice melt away
  • Helps prevent airflow restriction and reduced cooling caused by frozen evaporator coils
  • Commonly replaced when you see excessive frost, frequent defrost cycles, or poor cooling in the refrigerator/freezer
  • Works with the freezer's defrost control system (timer/thermostat/board) to run only during defrost
What's included: One defrost heater Install notes:
  • Disconnect power before servicing to avoid shock or injury
  • Inspect surrounding components (defrost thermostat/thermistor and wiring) for damage; replace if faulty
  • Handle the evaporator and heater carefully—avoid bending coils or damaging fins
