Manufacturer Part Number: 297366203

This genuine OEM part is a control display unit for freezers. The control display unit is the part that houses the digital display and buttons for the freezer settings. It displays the temperature of the freezer. Over time, a control display can become damaged due to excessive wear and tear. If the screen is cracked or the buttons are no longer operating, then the control display unit will need to be replaced. To replace this part, start by unplugging the freezer. Once it has been powered off, proceed to pry the display unit out from the freezer using a flat head screwdriver or putty knife. Gently pull up until it is released from its mounting brackets. After removal, take the new unit and snap it into its brackets, making sure it is securely in place. Restore power to the appliance. This replacement part is sourced directly from the manufacturer and is compatible with Frigidaire, Electrolux, Gibson, Kelvinator, and Westinghouse brand freezers.

Hamid R for Model Number Kenmore upright freezer, 16.7 cft, Model 970-187020

The freezer is only a couple of years old. Shortly after I got it (brand new) the controls locked up. A service technician came and (probably) reset something; the freezer started working and it worked perfectly for about two years. Then the same problem came back. Another tech visit to reset the control and the freezer is working quite well once again. Unfortunately, I could not talk to the repair technician as to what exactly he did. Removing power from the freezer for a few minutes or even an hour did nothing to it. I wonder what goes wrong with the unit to lock up the controls? Is there an easy way to check/trouble shoot this freezer? Is there any help you can offer to diagnose the problem?

Answer

Hamid, In most cases if the control board is locking itself then the issue would be with the control board having a key that gets stuck. As for what you can do to trouble shoot. It would be a internal error in the control and would be no way to trouble shoot it. If you have the owners manual, check to see if there is a control lockout section and if it locks out again try to unlock it as it could just be where someone pushed the wrong button.
