Part Number: OEM6214401
Manufacturer Part Number: WR51X442

The Defrost Heater is an OEM part for GE refrigerators. It plays a crucial role in the defrost system by heating the evaporator coil to melt any frost buildup. This ensures that the refrigerator operates efficiently by preventing ice accumulation that can obstruct airflow and cooling.

Over time, defrost heaters can fail due to factors such as electrical issues, prolonged use, or thermal stress. When the defrost heater malfunctions, frost can accumulate excessively on the evaporator coils, leading to cooling problems.

Symptoms of a bad defrost heater include:

  • Frost buildup on the evaporator coils
  • Inadequate cooling in the refrigerator or freezer compartments
  • The refrigerator running continuously without cycling off
  • Water leakage inside the refrigerator due to melting frost

This GE replacement part is also compatible with Hotpoint, RCA, and some Kenmore models.

Answer

Hello Bob, You may want to replace the defrost thermostat WR50X122 when you replace the defrost heater. The defrost thermostat turns off the heating element when it reaches about 50°F in the evaporator compartment. If it never opens and turns off the heating element, the heating element tends to burn out prematurely because it stays on until the defrost control, (timer or board), cycles out of the defrost cycle. Be aware that the defrost heater is the most common part to fail on this design.
