Kcken for Model Number 110.2897790 Kenmore Series 90 washer, circa 1999, 110.28922790 model number. This is a direct drive washer; I have never had a problem with it. About a month ago, I needed to replace the direct drive coupling. However the new one only lasted ~4 weeks, which perhaps indicates that there is something more that is a problem (the first one lasted ~15 years, the second one lasted less than a month). I think it may be acting as a mechanical fuse. However, I also note that turning the drum by hand is very difficult, like perhaps the brakes are binding. I don't have another washer to compare it to, nor do I know when the brakes might engage or when the brakes release. It spins OK, gets the clothes good and dry, but if I override the switch and observe, it seems it takes longer than normal to get to full speed. And it whines like a banshee when just starting the spin cycle. Brakes? Although if the brakes are dragging, the clutch cannot be far behind. AP3094537 is the correct clutch assembly (per the model number Appliance Compatibility Tool). And it comes with a new Brake Cam Driver; is this what engages and releases the brakes? Seems I would also need the special tool to remove the drum. Thank you for any assistance and guidance as I diagnose this problem. Repair is a much preferred alternative to replacement. And I don't desire a service call in addition to replacement, if it isn't something that is easily fixable.
Answer KCKen, The issue that you are having would more likely be caused by the brake dragging. To be able to replace the brake and drive tube assembly you would need to remove the inner basket of the unit which will require a spanner wrench TB123B. Here is a link to a video that will help you with replacement of the brake assembly. http://fast.wistia.net/embed/iframe/zqyo2niyl0?controlsVisibleOnLoad=true&plugin%5Bsocialbar-v1%5D%5Bbuttons%5D=email-twitter-googlePlus-facebook&version=v1&videoHeight=237&videoWidth=422&volumeControl=true&autoPlay=true Read More...
