Michael M. for Model Number LSQ9244WQ0

Whirlpool washer model LSQ9244EQ0. Agitator and drum would not work. Direct drive motor coupling plastic piece was broken. Purchased and installed new coupling. Now the agitator and the drum work. There are other issues though. When the lid is opened with the washer running, it makes a grinding sound as the agitator comes to a stop. Then, when closing the lid, there's a loud "pop" sound coming from directly beneath the drum, as the motor begins running again. Lastly, there is a sickening burning smell (electrical).

Answer

Michael, the noises and burn odor is probably due to and issue in the basket drive W10820043 or clutch assembly 285785 causing a "drag" on the motor and causing the odor. You may want to remove the agitator as well and check to see that the "dogs" aren't damaged or the agitator isn't distorted. If all's OK, the gearcase would be the issue.
