Hi Travis. The spring and rod will apply pressure to the handle when installed properly, so the handle is not loose. The Longer L-end of the lever will rest inside the back of the door handle. The spring will hook into the bottom center of the handle on the narrow center flange. There will be a notch in the same location on the inner side of the inner door panel to hook the other end of the spring. You should be a very visible area and even the scratch marks where the spring broke off.The service manual does not give a actual indication of the latch spring at all Handle part # WP9743903.
