Jean for Model Number A412 Maytag Washer The washer won't agitate but will drain water and will spin. I do get that burning smell or either belts or motor. Not sure if replacing the belts is the problem or not.
Answer Jean, You'll need to replace the belts, but first you need to determine if you need a transmission. Remove the front panel, Raise the front of the washer and block it up so it can't fall. reach under the machine and remove both belts. Grasp the transmission pulley and turn it clockwise, the transmission and tub should spin. Then turn the pulley counter clockwise the pulley should turn relatively easy and the agitator should oscillate back and forth, if the pulley won't turn or the agitator doesn't oscillate, you have a failed transmission.
