Mark for Model Number GEW9868KQ4 Whirlpool electric dryer stopped heating up this morning. It still runs on various settings, but doesn't get hot. What should I check first?
Answer Hello Mark, I would first check the exhaust duct. If it is long and complicated, crimped, or clogged, this can lead up to a failure of this sort. You see, the dryer has to get rid of the heat and moisture or the thermal cutout 279769 will fail and the unit will not heat. If this occurs and the thermal cutout is replaced without correcting the ducting, the thermal cutout will fail again. The main cause of dryer failures is the exhaust duct. Be fore-warned: The thermal cutout comes in a kit with the hi-limit thermostat. This is because the hi-limit thermostat is supposed to open before the thermal cutout. When the thermal cutout fails, this is an indication that the hi-limit thermostat is bad. For this reason, replace them both as per the instructions that come with the new kit. Read More...
