Causes of a malfunctioning washer drain pump assembly can include blockages from small items or debris, such as coins, socks, or lint, that accidentally make their way into the pump.

Symptoms of a bad Washer Drain Pump Assembly include:

  • Water not draining out of the washer, leaving clothes wet
  • Unusual noises coming from the pump area, indicating a blockage or damage
  • The washer stopping mid-cycle due to inability to drain
  • Error codes displayed on the washer related to draining issues

This OEM Whirlpool part can also be used on Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore/Sears brand appliances.

Jonathan for Model Number Whirlpool Duet HT Front-Loading Washer

My front-loading Whirlpool Duet HT washing machine is giving an F21 error and not draining the water. I opened up the front panel to access the pump and twisted it open to manually drain out the water, however it goes right back to an F21 error the next cycle. Is the pump bad? Is "Washer Drain Pump Assembly, Part Number: AP3953640, MFG Part Number: 280187, Made by: Whirlpool" the correct part to replace? If not, then what parts would I need to replace and does it come with instructions for doing the work yourself?

Answer

Hello Jonathan, Based on the information provided, the first step you want to take is to check you drain line to ensure that there are no obstructions. You would then want to pull your pump out and check to see if there is something caught in the pump assembly. If this checks ok and you have good connections then you would want to change out the pump.
