I suspected that the washer motor had shorted out due to a recent basement-flooding episode. I consulted the AppliancePartsPros online "exploded view" documentation, which was extremely helpful in telling me how to disassemble the unit as well as identifying all of the individual replacement parts available for it. As it turned out, the drive motor was indeed shorted, and its failure also caused (through overcurrent) the bimetallic door-locking mechanism to fail, too (the plastic lock mechanism housing melted and this was what caused the smoke). I ordered a motor and new lock mechanism, installed them, and the washer works fine once again. I am delighted with all aspects of AppliancePartsPros' service: low part price, comprehensive support documentation, fast shipping speed, and low shipping cost.
