Disassembled dishwasher parts: Fine filter, intake screen, coarse filter, took apart upper spray tube from pump discharge. Removed all these and scraped and wiped as much of the material as possible. Then used an HCL-based toilet bowl cleaner with water to scrub off and dissolve the material which was an amalgamation of grease and detergent/soap. The low pH of the toilet bowl cleaner broke up the material which citrus degreaser and dishwashing detergent could not touch. It was surprising how much goop there was and how many holes in the strainers were obstructed. I also fed the HCl cleaner into the spray arm and this cleared it out.
After completely cleaning all surfaces and rinsed and wiping down as much as possible with water, re-installed the part, filled the sump with hot water, and cycled the pump out. Then I ran through a cycle with approx 1/4 cup sodium carbonate ("washing soda") in the detergent dispenser, followed by a cycle with a dishwasher cleaning product. Result -- vastly improved flow, no more goop.
