The bake heating element cracked creating a small gap. This increase in resistance caused arcing across the gap resulting in flames. After the fire put itself out, I determined the cause and replaced the damaged lower heating element. Couldn't find the replacement part using the GE Monogram model number or using the part number listed on the old element. However, based on the physical dimensions and voltage/wattage stamped on the old part, I was confidently able to find an equivalent replacement part. Installation was straightforward. I removed two sheet metal screws to pull the element out a few inches from the back of the oven wall, then removed two screws separating the element from the wires (after securing the wires so they didn't disappear into the back wall. The reversed process to install the replacement.
