How to Troubleshoot & Replace Ge AP3964635 / WH49X10042 Washer Agitator Coupler Kit

After researching online, I ordered a new agitator and coupler. It was fast delivery. Both were easy to install, especially after watching the video. The clothes now don’t get wrapped around the agitator. We also watch how to place those types of clothes in the washer. Another option to also consider is a washer clothes bag for clothes with strings and straps. We fixed the problem for under $50 dollars. 

Very simple repair, just pulled off the agitator (using a loop of string, found this trick on a youtube video)- this was actually the hardest part of the repair, you really need to yank up on it pretty hard. Then you just unscrew the nut, slide off the old part, slide on the new one, and reattach the nut. Finally, slide the agitator back on (be careful to line up the grooves with those on the coupler), and press down to snap it back into place (this is much easier than getting it off!). Done- works like a charm now. 

Found instructions on the web for removal, (fill tub to minimum amount with HOT water, wait 10 minutes, place straps or rope on both sides under the agitator and yank up). The part fit perfectly, i pushed the agitator back on, and the fix was done, all told, in literally 5 minutes. I am not including the hot water waiting time and the time it took me to clean the 20-year guck at the base.. 

I ordered a agitator coupling from Appliance Parts Pros, I had my brother to put it on, machine is working fine, thank you so much people. 

Very quick fix. Simply pulled the agitator, removed the old coupler and installed the new one. Less than a 5 minute fix. 

My wife said that the washer was broke! I said, not again, I had the motherboard replaced and the guide belts in 2012 for $238.50, now this? I was going to just buy another washer to match the dryer but there has to be another approach. So I google in my GE model number along that it won't agitate. I had a few responses. Apparently it is a common failure for that model. Then I clicked on AppliancePartsPros.com. They had a response, a video on how to fix it and the part and price too. So, I watched video. I pulled up and removed the agitator, then unscrewed the motor coupler bell and noticed that the inside coupler teeth were worn. There were many fine pieces of plastic spines separated from inside the coupler bell. So, the part was $6.50 and shipping was $9.50. I ordered it on a Sunday an it arrived Tuesday morning via FedEx. Quicker than a repairman would get here and àt a miracle price for the part and shipping. For $16.00 and 15 minutes I was done. Thanks. 

I replaced the agitator coupler and the agitator itself. The how-to video on AppliancePartsPros was really helpful - I would have fumbled around for an hour trying to figure out how to do this. Because of the great guidance, I knocked this out in five minutes. I might have been able to find the parts for a little less somewhere else, but I didn't even bother - the amount of time this site saved me in ensuring that I had the right part and in significantly speeding up the repair was worth far more to me. I really appreciate their great support and will recommend this site to my friends. 

Pulled Agitator straight up and removed the plastic coupling using an adjustable wrench. Cleaned parts and replaced the broken agitator coupling with the new one. Wrenched the new lag bolt in, and put the agitator straight on. Cleaning took some time as my washer is 14 years old. Replacement took no more than 60 seconds and was cheap! $6.87 and I don't have to buy a new washer! 

I found a couple of good tips online that helped me diagnose the problem. I've ordered parts from AppliancePartsPros and I brought up their e-catalog where I found that the parts. I needed to do the repair on my GE washer were very reasonably priced, plus there was a great video that told me everything I needed to know about doing the actual repair. The parts were shipped and recieved before the end of week. The repair was simple, especially after watching the APPros video, and we were doing laundry again in no time.
