Machine:
LG dishwasher LDS5540ST
Symptom:
During wash cycle, dishwasher sounded like a bumblebee driving backwards in an old stick shift car with worn out reverse gears. Zwrrrrrr. This condition started suddenly one day, and persisted.
Initial inspection:
Removed components from inside, to check for any foreign matter, and found none. Noticed at this time that the pump gasket was limp and loose, so made sure to order a new gasket together with new circulation motor.
Special tools:
From prior repair work, I had a 16 mm crowfoot wrench, ideal for removing my inlet hose in the cramped lower front area. Would recommend that people either buy or cobble together some sort of extra-short stubby hand tool for this, and test it while waiting for the replacement motor to be delivered. Also had necessary hose plugs for the inlet hose end, and the disposal hose end. Makes the job tidier.
Procedure: Some online videos showed detailed steps for removing inside components (e.g., turning the reverse-threaded screw on the circulation motor shaft), tilting the dishwasher onto its back, and replacing the motor. The videos were very thorough, but I would add my own caution: the plastic wire harness that plugs into the motor's connector has delicate side locking tabs. See these, and press them with respect, to avoid snapping plastic. If they snap, the fit is still snug anyway, but best to keep everything in one piece.
Outcome:
The new motor and gasket have been performing great.
