How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP6013837 / WP9742946 Nylon Radial Ring Bearing

I nearly shelled out for a new Kitchenaid when I remembered APP and entered my model # just for fun. The interactive diagrams and install videos showed where all the parts "should" be, mine were badly disintegrated, so I replaced the damaged ones and swapped out all of the other easily accessible seals and bearings (also gave it a good and very disturbing cleaning). My parts surprisingly arrived next day and for about $40, the dishwasher is quiet and works like new again. 

Nylon bearing wore thin allowing excess slop in spray arm. Spray arm caught basket as it was pulled out. Retaining nut broke off. Removed remaining portion of nut from dishwasher, replaced both bearings and retaining nut. Happily washing again. It took longer to type this than it did to make the repair. 

Used the vinyl touch up paint on the tops of posts and slid vinyl tips over 130 posts. The paint acts as an adhesive to keep the tips secure. 

I cleaned all the jet nozzles with a toothpick and a pipe cleaner to remove the hard water deposits. I then replace the ring bearing under the bottom spray wand and the ring bearing under the upper spray wand. I also replaced the smaller radial ring bearing. Although none of them looked overly worn, it doesn't take much to cause the spray wands to spray inadequately. Then, I replaced the float and washer assembly. Although it appeared to work properly when I lifted up on it and let it down, it wasn't until I installed the new one that I found that the inside of the assembly was completely 'gunked' (my word). Both the pillar and the inside of the float were covered in a brown sticky grime that was no doubt keeping the float from working properly. Finally, I ran 1/2 cup of CLR in the Normal wash cycle. This helped to clean the interior of the dishwasher. I also used a gentle scouring pad to clean the interior and ran the dishwasher several times until the were no suds in the wash cycle. All is well! 

Ordered parts from your extensive list of repair parts and made repairs. Videos were very helpful even though the job was simple it was nice to see you offer this on your site as well. Checked the screen and it was clean. Ran a cycle with vinegar and that cleaned up the smell. While checking the screen I noticed the bushings were worn out. Found you drawing and ordered the parts. Replaced the parts, a simple job. Dishwasher is good. Kurt 

Searched your site and found drawings and videos to assist me. ordered a new bearing that arrived the next day. followed the instructions in your video and installed the new bearing. 

I ordered a replacement lower spray arm and the required bearings. AppliancePartsPos.com responded to an email, asked for a picture of the part, and told me which bearings to order. Once the parts arrived a day later, they took less than 3 minutes to fix. Appreciated the help, attention to detail, and customer service! Saved me loads of money. 

I attempted to tighten the existing spray arm retainer (screw), but it wouldn’t move - then broke in the next wash cycle. Luckily I was able to remove the broken screw from the base turning it with my finger inside it. I was able to easily locate the WPL parts number from the broken piece, confirm with online manual for the model number, and ordered both the retainer screw and the ring bearing - which I realized was not on for some reason. I spoke with a couple customer service people to confirm I was on the right track - both were very helpful. The prices were a little less than other appliance parts company I checked with. The two parts came fast and assembly took a minute, no tools needed. I saved money on repair and felt like a very accomplished Grandma.
