Hello Paul, The part was most likely destroyed by pre-rinsing the dishes and possibly over soaping since the chemical reaction produced by the detergent had no food particles to occupy it. This caused the chemical reaction to deteriorate the part. The part has to be replaced since it is responsible for holding water pressure and without it, the water pressure will escape and the wash result will suffer.

Hello Nancy, The WP9742946 is for the lower spray arm assembly. The nylon bearing ring for the upper spray arm is not available as an individual part. You would have to replace the upper spray arm WP3379369.

Bobby, You're on target, great deduction. Replace both bearings WP9742946 , WP3376846 and check the bottom side of the spray arm insert for damage as well, replace it if necessary.

Tom, No, the spray arm components would not normally cause a drain issue in a dishwasher, you will want to replace them in order to maintain proper washabilty. You may want to start by disconnecting the drain hose from the plumbing under the sink and drain the dishwasher, this will usually clear any minor clogs in the pump and drain hose.
